4 Bollywood Movies On Taboo Topics That Struck Box Office Gold

Good cinema has a lasting impact on audiences, and Bollywood has delivered several remarkable films that were well ahead of their time. Interestingly, many of these innovative films not only challenged conventional storytelling but also performed exceptionally well at the box office. Released within a span of just ten years, titles such as Kya Kehna, Dil Chahta Hai, 3 Idiots, and Dev D broke new ground and connected deeply with viewers despite their unconventional themes.

Kya Kehna (2000): Let’s begin with the 2000 film Kya Kehna. Featuring Preity Zinta, Saif Ali Khan, Chandrachur Singh, Anupam Kher, and Farida Jalal in key roles, the film explored a bold and sensitive subject. The story was penned by Honey Irani, former wife of lyricist Javed Akhtar, who also wrote the screenplay.

Directed by Kundan Shah and produced under the Tips banner, the film featured music by Rajesh Roshan, with lyrics by Majrooh Sultanpuri. The film’s soundtrack was a massive success. Produced on a budget of Rs 5 crore, the film grossed approximately Rs 22 crore and was declared a superhit. Its narrative, centred on a young woman who decides to have a child out of wedlock and is supported by her family, was considered ahead of its time, especially for mainstream Indian cinema.

Dil Chahta Hai (2001): Released on August 10, 2001, Dil Chahta Hai became a cult classic. The film followed the story of three college friends navigating love, life, and friendship after graduation. Its youthful tone and modern storytelling style set it apart from most films of its era.

The cast included Akshaye Khanna, Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Dimple Kapadia, Sonali Kulkarni, and Preity Zinta. The film marked the directorial debut of Farhan Akhtar, who also wrote the story and screenplay. With a budget of around Rs 14 crore, it grossed Rs 20 crore in India and Rs 39 crore worldwide, making it a commercial success.

Over time, its reputation grew, and it is now regarded as a trendsetting film with cult status. Incidentally, Aamir Khan also starred in Lagaan, another landmark film released in the same year.

3 Idiots (2009): On December 25, 2009, 3 Idiots hit cinemas and made history by becoming the first Bollywood film to gross Rs 200 crore domestically. Even sixteen years later, it remains a firm favourite across generations. Set in an engineering college, the film questioned the rigidity of India’s higher education system and advocated for practical learning over rote memorisation.

The cast featured Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Kareena Kapoor, Boman Irani, and Omi Vaidya. Directed by Rajkumar Hirani and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, the film was made on a budget of Rs 77 crore and went on to earn Rs 350 crore globally.

It was the highest-grossing Indian film of 2009 and continues to be viewed as both a cult classic and a film far ahead of its time.

Dev D (2009): Released in the same year, Dev D featuring Abhay Deol, Kalki Koechlin and Mahie Gill offered a bold, contemporary reinterpretation of the classic novel Devdas. Unlike previous adaptations, Dev D portrayed its characters in a modern and realistic light.

In this version, Dev is already a heavy drinker, and Paro is shown smoking, both stark departures from the traditional portrayals. After marriage, Paro confronts Dev in a manner rarely seen in earlier versions, even using strong language.

Directed by Anurag Kashyap, the film received critical acclaim for its bold storytelling and was praised for being well ahead of its time. Though not a mainstream blockbuster, Dev D remains an underrated gem that helped redefine the landscape of modern Hindi cinema.
