7 Bollywood Stars Who Changed Their Names Before Entering Films
Behind the dazzling lights of the Indian film industry lies a fascinating truth: some of its most iconic names were created purely for the silver screen. Whether it was to sound more poetic, avoid confusion with existing stars, or reinvent their entire identity, many legendary actors shed their birth names before step-stamping their authority on cinema. Here are seven massive Bollywood stars who changed their names before entering films.
7 Bollywood Stars Who Changed Their Names Before Entering Films
1. Akshay Kumar (Rajiv Hari Om Bhatia)
Long before he became Bollywood’s ultimate action-comedy star, he was Rajiv Hari Om Bhatia. While working as a martial arts instructor and a model, he landed a tiny, 10-second cameo as a martial arts coach in the 1987 film Aaj. The lead actor’s character name in that film happened to be Akshay. Rajiv liked the ring of it so much that he went straight to court, officially changed his name to Akshay Kumar, and went on to sign his breakout debut film Saugandh under his new moniker.
2. Amitabh Bachchan (Inquilaab Srivastava)
The Shahenshah of Indian cinema was actually named Inquilaab Srivastava at birth, inspired by the famous freedom struggle slogan ‘Inquilab Zindabad.’ However, his father, the legendary poet Harivansh Rai, decided to change his son’s first name to Amitabh. Furthermore, while the family’s actual surname was Srivastava, Harivansh Rai used his pen name Bachchan professionally. When entering the film industry, Amitabh chose to drop Srivastava entirely, adopting Bachchan as his official last name.
3. Dilip Kumar (Muhammad Yusuf Khan)
Widely regarded as the pioneer of method acting in Indian cinema, the legendary actor was born Muhammad Yusuf Khan into a Pashtun family in Peshawar. When he was discovered by actress Devika Rani, who was the head of the prominent studio Bombay Talkies, she offered him his debut film Jwar Bhata (1944). However, she requested that he change his name to a Hindu screen name to appeal to a wider, pan-Indian audience. He was given options, chose Dilip Kumar, and went on to become the tragic king of Hindi cinema.
4. Katrina Kaif (Katrina Turquotte)
British-Indian actress Katrina Kaif entered the modeling and film world using her maternal surname, Turquotte. When filmmaker Kaizad Gustad cast her in her debut film Boom (2003), the film’s producers most notably Ayesha Shroff felt that her original surname would be far too difficult for Indian audiences to pronounce or remember. They decided to change it to Kaif, a surname of Indian origin, to make her sound more relatable to domestic cinema-goers.
5. Preity Zinta (Preetam Singh Zinta)
Known for her bubbly screen presence and dimpled smile, Preity Zinta was born Preetam Singh Zinta in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh. Preetam is traditionally a masculine name in India, and as she transitioned from a career in modeling and high-profile television commercials into mainstream commercial cinema with Mani Ratnam’s Dil Se.. (1998), she decided to tweak her name to the softer, more feminine Preity.
6. Ranveer Singh (Ranveer Singh Bhavnani)
The high-octane powerhouse of modern Bollywood didn’t completely change his first name, but he strategically pruned his legal name for maximum impact. Born Ranveer Singh Bhavnani, he realized early on that his full name sounded a bit long, clunky, and lacked a certain star quality punch. Furthermore, he felt it carried less commercial appeal. Before his explosive debut in Band Baaja Baaraat (2010), he dropped Bhavnani completely, stepping into the industry simply as Ranveer Singh.
7. Kiara Advani (Alia Advani)
Born Alia Advani, the actress changed her name right before her major Bollywood debut in Fugly (2014). The genius behind this move? None other than Salman Khan. Salman advised her that since Alia Bhatt was already a massive, established superstar in the industry, having two actresses with the exact same first name would cause immense confusion for the media, PR, and the audience. Taking his advice, she chose the name Kiara inspired by Priyanka Chopra’s character in the film Anjaana Anjaani.
