‘Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc’ Tears Through a Major Global Box Office Milestone
Sony Pictures revealed that Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc broke a major milestone nearly a week after its release in the Western market. The film has grossed over $108 million worldwide and counting and has been highly praised by fans and critics alike. According to Sony, the MAPPA anime film has become the #1 movie in the world and celebrated its phenomenal response from fans.
The announcement was made on Sony’s social media account, citing the film’s perfect Verified Hot Rotten Tomatoes score. As of writing, the audience reception for Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc has dropped slightly to 99%; however, it has received a perfect critics’ score of 100%, with many praising the anime’s newest director, Tatsuya Yoshihara, and how the story was entertaining for existing fans who watched the Crunchyroll series.
The praise the Chainsaw Man film has received for being different from the 2022 anime series when it was first released on Crunchyroll. While it received high praise from fans and critics alike on Rotten Tomatoes, scoring in the 90s, it faced criticism in Japan, where domestic audiences disliked the artistic choices of the show’s director, Ryū Nakayama. They claimed it was a “bad anime adaptation,” didn’t like the use of CGI, and wasn’t faithful to the source material because it lacked comedy and momentum. During the lead-up to the film’s release, a compilation film featuring a recap of Chainsaw Man Season 1 was released, and fans noticed it didn’t credit not only the previous director but also the show’s staff.
What’s ‘Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc’ About?
Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc is an anime feature that continues straight from Season 1, introducing new devils the Public Safety Division must face, and adapts the “Bomb Girl” arc. After Denji (Kikunosuke Toya/Ryan Colt Levy) goes on a date with Makima (Tomori Kusunoki/Suzie Yeung), he meets a girl named Reze (Reina Ueda/Alexis Tipton), whom he immediately falls for. But after declining her offer to run away with him, she reveals herself to be the Bomb Devil.
Reze/Bomb Devil’s appearance was teased during the Chainsaw Man Season 1’s finale episode, and there were discussions about whether the “Bomb Girl” arc should be part of Season 2. According to MAPPA’s president, Manabu Otsuka, the studio has decided to adapt the story arc into a feature-length film, as it’s aware of its fan-favorite status and wants to share it with more people.
