Veteran singer and actor Sulakshana Pandit, renowned for her soulful voice and memorable roles in Hindi cinema, passed away on November 6, 2025, at the age of 71 due to cardiac arrest, leaving behind a rich legacy in both music and film.
A family rooted in music
Sulakshana Pandit was a distinguished figure in Indian music and cinema, celebrated for her melodious voice and charismatic screen presence. Born on 12 July 1954 in Raigarh, Chhattisgarh, she hailed from a family with deep musical roots. She was the niece of the legendary classical vocalist Pandit Jasraj and the sister of the acclaimed music composer duo Jatin-Lalit.
Early beginnings and musical rise
Her musical journey began at the tender age of nine, and she made her playback singing debut in 1967. Sulakshana rose to prominence with the soulful song Tu Hi Saagar Hai Tu Hi Kinara from Sankalp (1975), which earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer. One of her early successes included the duet Saat Samandar Paar with Lata Mangeshkar from Taqdeer (1967).
She went on to lend her voice to numerous memorable songs such as Pardesiya Tere Desh Mein, Bekrar Dil Tut Gaya, Yeh Pyar Kiya Hai, and Sona Re Tujhe Kaise Miloon. Singing in multiple languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Oriya, and Gujarati, Sulakshana became one of the most versatile playback singers of her time.
Transition to acting: a celebrated screen presence
Alongside her singing career, Sulakshana successfully ventured into acting. She made her acting debut in Uljhan (1975) opposite Sanjeev Kumar and went on to star in notable films such as Sankoch (1976), Hera Pheri, Apnapan, Khandaan, and Waqt Ki Deewar.
Sulakshana shared the screen with leading stars of her era, including Rajesh Khanna, Jeetendra, Vinod Khanna, Shashi Kapoor, and Shatrughan Sinha. Her elegance, emotional depth, and charm made her one of the most respected actresses of the 1970s and 1980s. She also acted in the Bengali film Bandie (1978) alongside the legendary Uttam Kumar.
A poignant love story and personal struggles
Sulakshana Pandit’s personal life often drew attention, particularly for her deep affection for her Uljhan co-star Sanjeev Kumar. Reports suggest that she had wished to marry him, but he declined, leaving her deeply affected. Following his death in 1985, she chose never to marry and gradually withdrew from public life. In a poignant coincidence, she passed away on the same date—6 November—that marked Sanjeev Kumar’s death decades earlier.
Her final days and legacy
Her brother, music composer Lalit Pandit, confirmed that Sulakshana passed away at Nanavati Hospital in Mumbai due to cardiac arrest after complaining of breathlessness.
Sulakshana Pandit leaves behind an enduring legacy in Indian entertainment — as a playback singer with a hauntingly beautiful voice and an actor who graced the silver screen with grace and depth. Her contributions to Hindi cinema and music continue to inspire generations of artists and audiences alike.
