Kevin Costner Goes Full Jason Statham in His Most Underrated Action Movie Heading to a Free Streamer
By the time 1990 rolled around, Kevin Costner was not only a household name but already had numerous iconic credits under his belt. Movies like Chasing Dreams and Testament laid the pillars for his lengthy career, while, as he moved and worked through the 1980s, he cemented himself as one of the most sought-after actors in the industry thanks to his work in Brian De Palma’s ensemble heavy gangster flick The Untouchables and Phil Alden Robinson’s timeless sports fantasy favorite Field of Dreams. As the decade turned, Costner kept up his remarkable pace with his multi-award-winning feature Dances with Wolves, which also served as his feature-length directorial debut, and other smash hits like Kevin Reynolds’ Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and Oliver Stone’s JFK.
Considering the amount of attention the aforementioned movies received at the turn of the decade, it’s easy to understand how one of the Yellowstone star’s other projects flew under the radar all together. When one thinks about Costner, images in period dramas or Westerns are likely the first things that come to mind, not the actor playing a character akin to Keanu Reeves’ John Wick who uses his hands to solve his problems. But, this would be a total disservice to Costner fans, as one of the actor’s most slept-on movies sees him channel his inner action hero in a role that feels more in line with one that Jason Statham might sign on for.
In 1990, following the worldwide phenomenon of Field of Dreams and just ahead of his Dances With Wolves directorial debut, Costner went on a revenge-driven quest in Tony Scott’s dark romantic thriller Revenge. Featuring performances from an ensemble that also included Anthony Quinn (Lawrence of Arabia), Madeleine Stowe (It: Welcome to Derry), and an at the time up-and-comer named John Leguizamo (The Pest), the movie is one from the ever-expansive catalog of Costner’s that doesn’t get as much hype or praise as his other of-the-time hits. However, considering the film’s pulse-pounding nature and the vision poured into it by the director behind enduring favorites like Top Gun, Days of Thunder, Enemy of the State and Man on Fire, it should absolutely be on the list of movie lovers when it arrives on the free streamer Tubi beginning June 1.
What Is ‘Revenge’ About?
As the title suggests, Revenge is a movie about one man finding retribution after having his world taken from him. The film centers on Costner’s Jay Cochran, who has just left his life in the US Navy behind and is taking some downtime to visit his friend Tibey (Quinn) in Mexico. Tibey also just so happens to be the leader of an organized crime syndicate and the husband of Miryea (Stowe). After Jay and Miryea discover feelings for one another, a jealous Tibey seeks vengeance, which Jay then pays back tenfold.
