Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar has made a significant move to enhance safety for action practitioners in India’s entertainment industry. The actor has procured insurance cover for about 650 stuntmen and stuntwomen across the nation. The move follows the recent demise of stuntman SM Raju, who died while working on the Tamil film Vettuvam, produced by Pa Ranjith and featuring actor Arya.
The move addresses long-standing concerns about the welfare of action performers, who often work in dangerous conditions without adequate protection. By ensuring coverage for hundreds of stunt professionals, Kumar has attempted to bridge a major gap in the industry.
Insurance Plan for Stunt Professionals
Aiding the development, experienced stunt artiste Vikram Singh Dahiya, who has worked in Gunjan Saxena, Antim, OMG 2, and forthcoming movies Dhadak 2 and Jigra, added, “It’s because of Akshay sir that about 650 to 700 stuntmen and members of the action crew in Bollywood are now insured. The cover has cashless medical expenses up to Rs 5 to 5.5 lakh, whether the injury happens on or off set.”
The policy offers a fiscal safety net for those who risk their lives to bring high-octane action to the screen. The coverage doesn’t end on sets, offering protection even if it happens off shooting schedules.
Growing Worries Following Tragic Death
The move comes on the heels of stuntman SM Raju’s tragic death on a shoot for Vettuvam. The incident brought back debates regarding crew safety while working on film shoots and put pressure on the industry to bring about reforms at the earliest. Kumar’s move has been embraced as a welcome step in an industry where risks are still high.
Industry experts think that this move can inspire other production houses and actors to follow suit. Stunt artists have been the backbone of Bollywood action sequences for decades, but usually without minimal safeguards.
Industry Response and Next Steps
Dahiya welcomed the decision of the actor, terming it an initiative that provides peace of mind to hundreds of professionals exposed to life-threatening hazards. He further stated that the initiative is a benchmark for the industry and would lead to better working conditions.
A Landmark Step in Bollywood Safety
With the new insurance cover, hundreds of action professionals have access to urgent assistance in the event of accidents. The move marks a change in attitude in the industry when it comes to safety, with Kumar setting the example.
For others, this is a milestone event where the efforts of behind-the-scenes heroes, stuntmen, and stuntwomen are being recognised and protected.
