Everything to know about the Nintendo sequel as 1st trailer drops
Well, look what the Question Block coughed up. Illumination and Nintendo officially unveiled our first look at The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, the next level in the cartoon franchise inspired by the vintage video game about a pair of New York plumbers-turned-Mushroom Kingdom celebrities. Debuting in theaters next April, the sequel to the 2023 animated blockbuster is set to take Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day) into the final frontier for a galaxy-hopping adventure inspired by the 2007 game that launched Nintendo’s Wii era.
The near-wordless teaser charts that trajectory on the wings of a yellow butterfly, who soars from Mario’s sleeping form through the territory surrounding Peach’s Castle — home to Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) — and through the clouds to the stars beyond. Once there, we’re greeted by a yellow Luma, the chatty astral beings that guide Mario through his galactic journey. (A blue version, Lumalee, appeared in the previous movie.)

Here’s everything you need to know about the next Super Mario movie ahead of its release next spring. Letsa go, indeed.
What is The Super Mario Galaxy Move about?
Apart from strongly suggesting that Mario and Luigi are space-bound, Illuminatio and Nintendo are keeping plot details for the sequel locked in a treasure chest. But the plot of the game might provide some clue; Super Mario Galaxy transported the brothers off-world and set them down on a spaceship called the Comet Observatory, piloted by fan-favorite Rosalina. The Mario boys have to help Rosalina collect her missing Power Stars and then take the fight to the regular nemesis, Bowser.
Who’s in the cast?
Rosalina’s voice actor has yet to be revealed… and you can bet that Super Mario fans will have opinions when that announcement is made. But the entire cast of the previous film is returning, led by the trio of Pratt, Day, and Joy. Jack Black is also back as Bowser — which means we’ll almost certainly be getting a follow-up to his chart-topping “Peaches” ditty — while Keegan-Michael Key once again voices Toad and Kevin Michael Richardson reprises his role as Kamek.
When can I see it?
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will warp its way to movie screens on April 3, 2026, almost exactly three years to the day after its predecessor’s record-breaking launch. The first Super Mario cartoon ended up grossing $1.3 billion worldwide and the sky’s the limit for how well this new one could do. One place where the franchise hasn’t fared as well, though, is in the Oscar race. Despite earning a Best Animated Feature nomination at the Golden Globes — as well as nods for Best Original Song and Cinematic and Box Office Achievement — The Super Mario Bros. Movie was passed over for in the equivalent category at the Academy Awards.
