‘Genuinely scary’ movie horror fans ‘should not miss’ is on TV tonight
The supernatural horror film that acts as a sequel to a 1992 cult classic is available to watch on TV tonight as the Halloween blues settle in.
Drawing inspiration from a legendary horror flick, this 2021 reimagining serves as a continuation of the spine-chilling tale that captivated cinema enthusiasts – and it’s available to view on TV this evening.
Candyman stands as a supernatural horror picture jointly crafted by Nia DaCosta, Jordan Peele and Win Rosenfeld, who revived the story from the 1992 beloved classic. Exploring sinister subject matter, it functions as a sequel that retells the myth of an enduring hex passed down through generations of black men who were killed.
The story centres on an artist, portrayed by Emmy-winning performer Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who has relocated his existence to the transformed housing estate in Chicago. Whilst seeking creative spark, he discovers the tale of the Candyman and the narrative connecting him to Sherman Fields’ murder during the 1970s.
Newly motivated to produce exceptional artwork, he quickly develops a fixation with this folklore and delves further into accounts of the mysterious murderer.
His fascination transforms into madness, and as he becomes consumed by it, he discovers himself evolving into the Candyman’s subsequent host.
One admirer of the movie wrote on Rotten Tomatoes declaring they considered the film “brilliant”, whilst others described it as “heartbreaking”, due to its themes of racial injustice.
A concise yet positive critique proclaimed Candyman was “moody, unsettling, and genuinely scary”.
Another review states: “Candyman starts strong with an eerie, child-focused opening and creative puppet storytelling that adds to the mythic feel. The visuals and atmosphere are haunting, especially scenes like the elevator blackout and mirrored laundry rooms.”
Meanwhile, another viewer shared: “The film keeps you on edge the entire way through with its different strains of horror: body, psychological & slasher. The film might be too short & rushed, but its journey was impressive.”
Candyman stemmed from a 1985 short story called The Forbidden, penned by Clive Barker, which first brought the fictional legend to life. The spine-chilling character, crafted for a horror collection, was a spirit and the son of an enslaved person who met a brutal end during the 19th century, with his heartbreaking past echoing throughout the film series.
The concept was transformed and brought to cinemas by Bernard Rose, with Tony Todd portraying the original Candyman. Todd returns in this updated take on the story, appearing as the spectre of artist Daniel Robitaille, alongside stars including Colman Domingo and Vanessa Williams.
A viewer wrote: “A heartbreaking drama of the ghosts created from the injustice and hatred of the world impacting generation after generation. A worthy and notable legacy sequel that should not be missed.”
For numerous devotees, this 2021 instalment in the series matches its forerunners. One viewer commented: “I am the biggest fan of the original two movies … this was different enough to just be a different movie with the same message regarding racial issues. I really enjoyed it.”
Candyman will be broadcast on BBC Three tonight at 10:30pm. Alternatively, the contemporary reimagining is also available to stream now on Amazon Prime for those who simply can’t wait.
