‘Gripping’ classic action movie inspired by Die Hard now streaming
The film was inspired by a television series and it sparked its own sequels
A ‘gripping’ classic 2000s action movie that fans think is clearly inspired by Die Hard is now streaming on Prime Video.
Recently added to the streaming giant’s offering, the film SWAT is now available to subscribers. Originally released back in 2003, it is actually inspired by a television series of the same name from the 1970s.
Like the TV show, the film revolves around a police Special Weapons and Tactics ( known as SWAT) team operating in Los Angeles. The plot follows the leader of the team, Hondo Harrelson, who in turn recruits Jim Street to join the elite unit based out of the LAPD after Street and his former partner were kicked off the last team after a job went wrong.
Together, they look to sign up even more members, creating a band of misfits including tough Deke Kay and single mother Chris Sanchez. The team’s first big assignment to escort a big name French crime boss to prison. While at first it may seem a routine operation, matters soon become complicated when the crook offers a huge cash reward of $100 million to anyone who springs him free.
All the shadiest figures and most dangerous criminals of the LA underworld suddenly come out of the woodwork to step up for the prize, putting the newly formed SWAT team to the ultimate test. They’ll have to run a gauntlet of the deadliest killers in town to fulfil their mission…including not only the resentful Gamble, but a traitor in their own ranks.
The film boasts an ensemble cast who at the time, were not that well known on the big screen. However, years later they are now some of the most recognisable faces in Hollywood having appeared in huge blockbuster franchises from Marvel to Fast and the Furious.
That includes Samuel L Jackson, Colin Farrell, LL Cool J and Michelle Rodriguez. There’s also appearances from Octavia Spencer and Jeremy Renner.
It wasn’t a huge hit with the critics but it performed well at the box office taking in more than $200 million worldwide. It was enough to inspire the return of the franchise to television from 2017. Shemar Moore took over from Jackson in the role of Hondo and it lasted for eight season with a sequel spin-off due to be released later this year.
Film fans are still encouraged to witness where it all began. One fan went so far as to claim it is: “Probably one of the best action films you will ever see.”
While another added: “Terrific action movie from a cast of yet to be known Class A movie stars. Original, exciting, a believable storyline, twists and turns, this movie has it all. Five stars. Loved it!”
Someone else claimed: “5 out 5! One the best cops thrillers!” While one person posted: “SWAT is a slick and solid film that offers cool action and will entertain most.”
Even those who don’t think as highly of the title admit it is still a ‘perfect popcorn movie’ and ‘brilliant old school action that’s very underrated!” One person seemed to enjoy it as they recognised it was “no doubt influenced by the Die Hard series”.
SWAT is streaming on Prime Video.
