He-Man and Skeletor battle in new Masters of the Universe trailer
A new trailer for the live-action Masters of the Universe dropped Tuesday, and it shows pretty much everything a MOTU fan wants to see: He-Man, Man-At-Arms, Evil-Lyn, Battle Cat (as the MGM lion, no less!), Trap Jaw, and even Jared Leto’s take on Skeletor, who has a bit of an evil British flair to him. Given the muscly blue bodysuit, CGI skull face, and accent, one has to wonder just how much visible Leto we’re going to get in the movie.
Curious casting choices aside, the first full trailer for Masters of the Universe offers plenty of spectacle and the occasional goof, like it’s splitting the difference between Marvel Studios’ Thor and Thor: Ragnarok. Gags aside, Bumblebee director Travis Knight‘s take on the He-Man story looks like it’s taking the source material quite seriously, recreating the toy line with personal stakes and big, action-packed set pieces.
There’s just one open question: Where’s Orko? (If you spot him in the trailer, please respond.)
Masters of the Universe will follow 10-year-old Prince Adam, who crashed to Earth in a spaceship and was separated from his magical Power Sword, the only link to his home on Eternia. After tracking it down almost two decades later, Prince Adam is whisked back across space to defend his home planet against the evil forces of Skeletor. But to defeat such a powerful villain, Prince Adam will first need to uncover the mysteries of his past and become He-Man: the most powerful man in the Universe.
The new Masters of the Universe stars Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam/He-Man, Jared Leto as Skeletor, Idris Elba as Duncan/Man-at-Arms, Camila Mendes as Teela, Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn, Sam C. Wilson as Trap Jaw, Hafthor Björnsson as Goat Man, Kojo Attah as Tri-Klops, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson as Malcolm/Fisto, and Morena Baccarin as the Sorceress.
Mattel’s Masters of the Universe brand was first introduced to the world in 1982 through a line of action figures, which was followed by the animated series He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. The original animation ran for just two seasons, across 130 episodes, but spawned multiple spinoffs, sequel series (including two Netflix animated series), and animated movies.
Masters of the Universe comes to movie theaters on June 5.
