Is Sydney Sweeney’s New Movie Streaming Yet?
Sydney Sweeney’s Oscar campaign is in full swing. Her latest movie, Christy, tells the true story of Christy Martin, the most successful female boxer of the ’90s who, behind the scenes, endured years of abuse at the hands of her husband and trainer, Jim Martin (played by Ben Foster). It premiered to rapturous applause at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sept. 5, 2025 and is now playing in theaters. (Couch potatoes will have to sit tight — the movie’s not streaming just yet.)
“When I first read the script, I almost felt bad that I hadn’t heard of Christy’s story [before then] because I was like, everybody needs to know who she is,” Sweeney told People earlier this year. “She is so inspiring and her story will resonate and mean so much with so many people. I was like, ‘I need to make sure that I’m a part of making a next generation know who she is and have her as a role model.’”

What is Christy about?
Christy is about ‘90s boxer Christy Martin, who went from throwing punches in small-town West Virginia to becoming the most successful female boxer of her era. (She made history as the only female boxer to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated and became the first woman inducted into the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame in 2016, followed by the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2020.) But the movie is far from a feel-good biopic: behind Martin’s public triumph was a dark and violent private life with her husband and trainer, Jim. Adding to the tragedy was the fact she was a lesbian who suppressed her true self for years.
Is the movie Christy a true story?
Yes. The movie is based on the true story of Christy Martin, who was the most successful female fighter of the ‘90s. Outside the ring, she was trapped in an abusive marriage with her trainer, Jim. In 2010, that abuse turned nearly fatal when he attacked and shot her. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison, where he remained until his death in 2024.

Is the movie Christy worth watching?
If you’re a fan of sports biopics and/or Sydney Sweeney, Christy is probably worth your time (all 2 hours and 15 minutes of it). The movie has earned mixed reviews overall, holding a 69% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes as of this writing, but Sweeney’s performance has welcomed consistent praise. Plus, she gained 30 pounds and trained for three months for the role, which all but guarantees she’ll be part of the awards-season conversation.

How to stream the movie Christy
Christy is currently available to theater-goers only, but a digital release probably isn’t too far off. While exclusive theater windows vary from picture to picture — and depend at least in part on box-office success — smaller movies like Christy, which was produced by Black Bear Studios, are often available to rent or purchase through the Apple TV app in a matter of weeks. (For reference, the Black Bear movie Immaculate, which also starred Sweeney, was available to rent/purchase in less than a month after its theatrical release.)
A quick digital release is also likely if producers want to make a campaign push for the movie, which they presumably do given its prime awards-season release date, because it’ll give voters more opportunity to see the movie before voting ends. (Golden Globe nominations will be announced on Dec. 8 followed by Oscar nominations on Jan. 22.)

When will Christy be streaming?
There isn’t a confirmed streaming date for Christy just yet, but Friday, Nov. 28, seems like a safe bet. We’ll update this post when concrete information becomes available.
