X-Men ’97 Season Finale Trailer Throws Shade at Live-Action Movie Costumes

April 30, 20243 Mins Read

The final trailer for X-Men ’97 has been released, preparing the audience for the upcoming season finale, “Tolerance is Extinction.” However, despite the trailer’s dark tone, there is a moment of levity involving Fox’s X-Men costumes in it.

The trailer begins with a voiceover from Professor X, who remarks, “You were my first students. My family. I wanted you to free. Help build a world where mutants could live however they wish, safe and without fear. My X-Men.” During this, viewers are treated to scenes like Storm descending towards Jubilee and Sunspot in her new costume and Professor X himself wiping off his hoverchair. Later, Cyclops can be heard giving a speech about how every mutant out there “[needs] hope.” Storm adds that the X-Men should do what they do, which she says is “Believe in each other.”

X-Men ’97 Ex-Showrunner Recommends More Original Series Episodes Ahead of Finale

Ex-X-Men ’97 showrunner Beau DeMayo adds two more episodes for fans to watch before the season finale to ones he had recently recommended.

From there, more scenes pop up, such as Rogue getting Captain America’s shield, Nightcrawler fighting some opponents and Magneto wearing his original costume. Towards the end of the video, Cyclops throws Cable a uniform, to which he asks, “Am I going to war or a circus?” Cyclops retorts to his son, “What did you expect? Black leather?

X-Men producer Ralph Winter had previously delved into this topic in 2020 when asked how much discussion went into utilizing the leather outfits instead of the comic book costumes, avowing that at the time, the production team “did feel like [they] did a good job.” He went on to further comment, “We limited the amount of time in the wardrobe. Of course, there’s a joke in the movie about yellow spandex, which was directed at the fans. It wasn’t to [irritate] them but to say ‘Hey, we hear you. We understand what you want. We understand you don’t like the idea of Wolverine being taller than 5’4″.'”

“‘We understand you’d rather have everybody in the traditional garb. But we also have to make a movie that reaches a wide audience to justify the budget.'” Winter concluded. “[The trick to this is] always to bullseye the hardcore Marvel/X-Men fan, but do it in a way that doesn’t alienate an average moviegoer that might enjoy, or start to enjoy, these types of stories.”
