A new Netflix original film had only been available for a matter of hours before making emotional wrecks out of countless fans

Jay Kelly official trailer starring George Clooney
Netflix’s latest original film is being called a “masterpiece” with an ending that is guaranteed to leave tears in your eyes.
Released this Friday (5th December) on the streaming service, the gripping and surreal drama is already flying up the top 10 and reducing viewers to puddles of tears in the process.
Starring one of Hollywood’s most iconic movie stars, it paints a fictionalised portrait of an ageing A-list actor experiencing an existential crisis after an eye-opening reunion with an old friend.
Dropping out of his next project with just a week’s notice, he embarks on a quest across Europe with his manager and PR team in two to try and reconnect with his estranged daughter.
Starring George Clooney and directed by Noah Baumbach, Jay Kelly is a heartstring-pulling love letter to silver screen icons that’s currently one of the frontrunners to sweep at next year’s Academy Awards.
Also featuring a stellar ensemble supporting cast, including Adam Sandler, Laura Dern, Jim Broadbent and Emily Mortimer, who co-wrote the script with Baumbach, it’s a must-watch for film buffs this weekend.
The Telegraph promised fans in their five-star review: “George Clooney’s midlife crisis masterpiece will reduce you to tears.”
The Independent predicted major awards buzz for the emotional drama and praised Clooney’s lead performance: “Clooney seldom strays too far in his movies from his long-established persona as the handsome everyman.
“However, if he is playing yet another variation on himself in Jay Kelly, at least he’s doing so in a far more raw and revealing way than he has ever done before. That’s why a film that looks in its early scenes as if it’s going to be unbearably smug ultimately tugs so hard on the heartstrings.”
Accolades continued on Letterboxd, where one casual fan admitted: “I was mixed on this the first time I watched this but wow was I off base. The last act kind of wrecked me.
“There’s something for everyone in here and it’s certainly not just about celebrity. It’s one of the saddest and most horrifying portraits of regret I’ve seen, and perhaps the film which touched me most on a personal level this year.”
Someone else who was left in tears wrote: “When I wasn’t sobbing I was in awe of how gorgeous this looked from start to finish.”

And a final movie buff said: “I had such a strong emotional response to this. I’ve only become a movie crier recently and I think this is the most intense the feeling has been. I cried on the tube just remembering Sandler’s stupid face.
“I see the film’s flaws plain as day. But sometimes it’s not about objectivity, it’s about your heart. Jay Kelly is a beautiful film, inside and out, will be thinking about this for a long while.”
If Jay Kelly isn’t at the top of your watchlist yet make sure you find time for one of the best films of the year soon.
Jay Kelly is available to stream on Netflix.
