‘Painful’ Christmas movie with Game of Thrones star on BBC tonight
Kicking off the festive season is this modern Christmas movie on TV tonight, with an all-star cast including a Game of Thrones actress that fans can’t quite make their minds up about.
Released in 2019, this Christmas movie brought something new to the festivities, and now you can make your own mind up about the film as it airs tonight on TV.
The romantic story of Last Christmas was co-developed by famous British actress Emma Thompson, alongside her husband, Greg Wise. Its name is derived from the ever-popular 1984 Christmas classic song by George Michael and Wham!, taking the themes straight out of the iconic music video.
Playing the lead role is Emilia Clarke, best known for her role as Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones, alongside the love interest, Harry Golding. Of course, Thompson makes an appearance of her own, accompanied by Wicked star Michelle Yeoh.
In Last Christmas, we meet Kate, who is a young, frustrated Londoner unlucky in life and love, who works as an elf at a Christmas store. Then she meets Tom, and things seem to be looking up, or is it too good to be true?
While the capital city transforms itself into a winter wonderland, their growing attraction blossoms into a full-blown romance. Although following a series of events in which Kate can’t get hold of her new man, she discovers a shocking truth about who he really is.
Viewers’ opinions couldn’t be more divided on this Christmas movie, as one Rotten Tomatoes review claims the film was ‘painful’. They wrote: “Painful, horrible, terrible. From the script to the acting…Suggest you bring something to do if you have to watch this, like doing your taxes or electrolysis or something less painful. “
Meanwhile another viewer said: “Excellent movie. Warm, funny, interesting and endearing with great acting and direction. Let’s face it, ‘professional’ movie critics are idiots, so ignore them and watch the movie. You’ll enjoy it!”
One fan of the film wrote: “I had low expectations for Last Christmas, and yet I found myself being drawn in and entertained very quickly. The cast are so loveable and believable that they truly shine even with the few issues that the film has. I would not hesitate to add this to the list of rewatchable films this holiday season!”
Despite controversial thoughts on the film, many are in agreement that Clarke does a great job at lifting its Christmas spirits. Both of the leading actors have received plenty of praise for carrying the film. A review claims: “Could have been wonderful with a better script, but Emilia Clarke gives it her all, and Henry Golding breaks your heart. Feel good in the end.”
You can catch Last Christmas for what might be your first watch on BBC One tonight, as it airs at 11:25pm. If you can’t quite make the sofa in time tonight, the film is also available to stream on Disney+.
