The Street Fighter movie trailer has huge Street Fighter: Red Tape energy
The new Street Fighter movie is comedian Pete Holmes’ Street Fighter: Red Tape series up on the big screen. That’s the vibe we got from the teaser trailer that was unveiled at Thursday’s The Game Awards, and we won’t hear otherwise.
If you’re unfamiliar with Street Fighter: Red Tape, you’ve missed out on a treat. The full series, which you can watch here, features Holmes as a harried, office-based organiser who has to deal with the quirks of the second game’s combatants.
Sketches include firing Ken for being too similar to Ryu, quizzing Dhalsim (a brilliant Kumail Nanjiani, who you can watch in action below) about his suspiciously small skulls, and desperately trying to persuade M. Bison to lower the tournament’s travel budget.
Watching the official Street Fighter movie teaser trailer, we were taken right back to these sketches. We can absolutely see Cody Rhodes’ Guile yelling USA! USA! USA! at an empty office, or Ryu admitting he’s been bluffing his way through his move names.
And you know what? We couldn’t be happier. Street Fighter is a very silly series and it’s great that the movie is embracing that, costumes and all. We are, after all, talking about a franchise where a large, Speedo-wearing Russian man can pile drive a Japanese schoolgirl into a concrete floor, only to have her get up and fireball him into unconsciousness.
You can watch the official trailer above. With a cast that includes Jason Momoa, David Dastmalchian and Roman Reigns, Street Fighter will hit theaters in 2026.
