When will ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’ movie be released? Everything we know so far from details Jenny Han has shared
Looks like it isn’t ending after all: The Summer I Turned Pretty movie is on the way.
Following the Season 3 finale, Prime Video, the distributor of the hit coming-of-age series, announced that a feature-length film is in the works to wrap up the story.
“There is another big milestone left in Belly’s journey, and I thought only a movie could give it its proper due,” Jenny Han, the show’s creator, said in a statement. “I’m so grateful to Prime Video for continuing to support my vision for this story and for making it possible to share this final chapter with the fans.”
Han, who also wrote the trilogy of books on which the show is based, is set to write and direct the upcoming film. The news was announced during the red carpet celebration for the series finale in Paris on Wednesday.
“The Summer I Turned Pretty has struck a chord with audiences everywhere, creating moments of joy, nostalgia and connection that have made it a global sensation,” Courtenay Valenti, head of film, streaming and theatrical at Amazon MGM Studios, and Vernon Sanders, global head of television at Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, said in a joint statement. “We’re proud of the series’ extraordinary success and couldn’t be more excited to partner again with Jenny Han to bring fans an unforgettable next chapter.”
The Season 3 finale, which was presumed to be the final episode and installment of the series, was highly anticipated by fans of the show. While fans were satisfied with the outcome between Belly (Lola Tung) and Conrad (Chris Briney), many who have read the books felt that some of the major plot points were overlooked.

When will the movie be released?
“It’s still a little too soon to say,” said Jenny Han, the showrunner and bestselling author, on the Today show on Thursday, before adding that she has already completed a draft of the script. Later on in the segment, she said that the movie’s release date won’t be announced until next year.
Lola Tung, who joined Han on the Today show with her costars Chris Briney and Gavin Casalegno, revealed that she and her castmates have known about the upcoming movie “for a little bit.”
“It’s fun that it’s finally out there in the world,” Tung added.
Han, during a recent interview with Teen Vogue, addressed speculation that the feature film would be a Christmas 2025 release.
“I think the fans were hoping that we had already shot it, but we haven’t. And frankly, I’m glad that we haven’t because I really want to see that maturity in the characters and not feel like it’s immediately after. So that was important to me,” Han told the outlet.
Who will be in the cast?
While the official cast of The Summer I Turned Pretty movie hasn’t been revealed, we do know that Tung and Briney will be reprising their starring roles as Belly Conklin and Conrad Fisher. The duo posed for photos together in front of the backdrop promoting the film during the Paris event.
Based on the Season 3 finale, we can likely expect cast members like Casalegno, Sean Kaufman, Rain Spencer, Jackie Chung and Isabella Briggs to also reprise their roles in the film.
What will it be about?
Han has acknowledged how desperately fans want to see Tung and Briney’s characters happily together, following their emotional reunion in the Season 3 finale. That’s something she plans to deliver on.
“Writing the movie has been actually joyful to me,” Han told Teen Vogue. “I would say that I know that the fans want to see Belly and Conrad together as a couple, and I guess I could say that that’s something I can promise to them, and it’s partly why I’m doing it, is to be able to experience that with them in the present time.”
While Han hasn’t confirmed outright, it’s likely that the big milestone she’s referring to is Belly and Conrad’s wedding, which happens at the end of the final book, We’ll Always Have Summer.
What else has Han said?
In the Season 3 finale, fans finally see Belly and Conrad get back together, after two seasons of respective yearning. Despite initially being hesitant to commit to him again, Belly realizes, by the end of the episode, that she’s worthy of Conrad’s love — and that she still loves him too.
“I think that’s the hardest part of growing up is realizing that you’re going to continue to make mistakes. … She really doesn’t want to hurt other people. So it’s a lot to say yes. I think it’s a huge act of bravery for her to go after him and say, ‘I choose you,’” Han said.
Even prior to filming Season 3, Han knew that she wanted to write a movie to conclude Belly’s story, also telling the outlet, “It was already mapped out before. But I would say that was my vision for it, but everything took a minute to fall to place, so now it’s for sure, since it’s in print.”
