5 Bollywood Flops That Still Ended Up Getting Sequels From Mastiii 4 To Yamla Pagla Deewana 3
There is no better term than milking the cow when describing just how many sequels exist in today’s day and age. The film industry across the world is yearning for a hit film and if a formula has already been confirmed to work, why not try it again? This would make sense if their preceding films also did financially well on the box office.
However, not all films are that lucky. Here are 5 films that got sequels despite bombing in theatres.
Table of Contents
1. Mastiii 4
The first Mastifilm starring Ajay Devgn crossed over ₹32 crore. The second film, Grand Masti, was a massive hit, earning ₹151.24 crore in box office collections. The third film unfortunately, was a massive flop with Great Grand Masti only earning ₹19 crore despite its budget being of ₹50 crore.
Despite the massive flop, Milap Zaveri is bringing back the franchise with a fourth instalment. Riteish Deshmukh, Vivek Oberoi and Aftab Shivdasani are also set to return as the protagonists of the film.
2. Yamla Pagla Deewana: Phir Se
The first Yamla Pagla Deewana film was a massive box office hit, earning ₹72 crore worldwide. The sequel, unfortunately, was a massive flop with lifetime earnings of ₹48 crore. A third film was made despite that and earned only ₹14.9 crore on a budget of ₹30 crore.
3. Commando 3
The first film, Commando: A One Man Army, earned a total of ₹28 crore at the box office. The sequel was a massive flop, earning only ₹39 crore on a budget of ₹26 crore. It still has a third film and this time with a budget of ₹30 crore. It, too, didn’t make a lot of money. The film only earned a total of ₹37 crore on a budget of approximately ₹40 crore.
4. Baaghi 4
The first Baaghi was a massive hit, earning ₹125 crore on a budget of only ₹37 crores. The second film was an even bigger hit, earning a total of ₹257 crore on a budget of only ₹75 crore. Unfortunately, for the third film, it only earned around ₹137 crore on a budget of approximately ₹100 crores. Although the film didn’t get a chance to shine in the theatres. COVID-19 struck, and any chance it had of earning massive money went down the drain since theatres shut down.
That didn’t stop Tiger Shroff, as a fourth film was made regardless. Baaghi 4 earned a total of ₹66 crores, which was the lowest of the franchise.
5. Force 2
John Abraham’s Force earned a total of ₹40 crore on a budget of ₹28 crore. Despite not earning nearly as much as it should have, the film got a sequel. Force 2 earned a total of ₹58 crore on a budget of ₹40 crore, also flopping much to the filmmaker’s dismay.
What Led to Great Grand Masti’s Failure?
Everything was looking fine for Vivek Oberoi, Riteish Deshmukh and Aftab Shivdasani’s Great Grand Masti up until its premiere. The film got leaked online mere weeks before its grand release. As if to put fuel on the fire, it was forced to compete against a film as successful as Sultan.
The script wasn’t doing any favours for the film either, making fans turn away from theatres rather than go and watch the third instalment of the Masti franchise. The primary reason why it flopped was because of the leak.
This came as a massive surprise because Grand Masti was the first adult film in India to reach a ₹100 crore. Now, with the fourth film releasing on November 21, 2025, it could either turn the tide of the franchise or mark its end.
