Picture: Lionsgate
Happy Friday, and what a busy week it’s been for new Netflix releases and news! Close to 40 new releases dropped on Netflix over the past seven days, so here’s your full recap of what’s new and what’s been trending in the US charts for the week ending September 19th.
Lots still to look forward to throughout the remainder of September, including a very recent announcement that Doc, the Fox medical drama series starring Molly Parker, will be joining Netflix US next week.
What to Watch on Netflix This Weekend
28 Days Later (2002)
Rating: R
Language: English
Genre: Drama, Horror, Sci-Fi
Director: Danny Boyle
Cast: Cillian Murphy, Naomie Harris, Christopher Eccleston
Writer: Alex Garland
Runtime: 113 min / 1h 53m
For years, the original 28 Days Later movie was nearly impossible to watch on streaming. Thankfully, that’s changed over the past year or so in anticipation of the long-awaited revival of the Danny Boyle/Alex Garland IP. Sadly, the original movie will look a little rough around the edges, thanks to being filmed on some incredibly amateur filming equipment, which adds to the charm for many.
Released 23 years ago in theaters, the movie sees breakout star Cillian Murphy wake up a few weeks after a deadly virus breaks loose, causing anyone who comes in contact with it to become enraged.
The arrival is certainly opportune, given that 28 Years Later will be joining Netflix this weekend at midnight on Saturday, so if you’re in the mood for a zombie binge this weekend, Netflix is your home.
Black Rabbit (Limited Series)
Number of episodes: 8
Rating: TV-MA
Language: English
Genre: Drama
Cast: Jason Bateman, Jude Law, Ray Steven Lober
The big new series of the week is undoubtedly Black Rabbit, which sees heavyweights Jude Law opposite Jason Bateman in a frantic and tense limited series that details what happens when a restaurateur comes embroiled with his brother’s shaky connections, sending him headfirst into a criminal underworld.
Reviews have been mostly good across the board, especially from audiences, thus far, and have shot straight to the number spot on the charts. Once you’re done, I’d also highly recommend checking our in-depth interview with the showrunners, who give away a lot of secrets about the production.
Cobweb (2023)
Rating: R
Language: English
Genre: Horror, Mystery, Thriller
Director: Samuel Bodin
Cast: Lizzy Caplan, Antony Starr, Cleopatra Coleman
Writer: Chris Thomas Devlin
Runtime: 88 min / 1h 28m
We’re not done with horror just yet, with Cobweb joining the streamer yesterday, and it being a rare modern horror movie that’s mostly liked across the board with both audiences and critics, albeit the ending is still rather controversial. Headlined by an incredible performance by Lizzy Caplan, the film sees a young boy begin to suspect that his house may be haunted when he begins hearing noises from his bedroom walls. He becomes increasingly suspicious of the noises and his parents as things progress.
Next Gen Chef (Season 1)
Number of episodes: 8
Rating: TV-PG
Language: English
Genre: Game-Show, Reality-TV
Cast: Olivia Culpo, Thomas Keller, Tim Ryan
In the mood for some food? Next Gen Chef is easily one of the best cooking reality series Netflix has ever produced, even giving Iron Chef and, yes, even The Great British Baking Show a run for its money.
The incredibly slickly made series takes you into the halls and kitchens of the prestigious Culinary Institute of America (CIA for short) with some of the best young chef talents from around the world competing for a grand prize. Their creations have to be nothing short of perfect, and thanks to some stunning, honest, and sometimes brutal feedback, it’ll feel like you’re in a Gordon Ramsey kitchen.
All episodes bar the finale, which airs on September 24th, are now streaming on Netflix.
