Sydney Sweeney Looks Drastically Different In New Sports Movie Role
“Euphoria” actress Sydney Sweeney has ditched her usual look to transform into legendary boxer Christy Martin.
Sweeney, who has starred in movies such as “Anyone But You” and “Immaculate,” trained incredibly hard to play Martin, the first female boxer ever elected into the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame. When she wrapped filming in November 2024, she posted a heartfelt message on Instagram about this project and what it meant to her.
“I don’t usually write a lot in my captions but this movie and experience I feel needs more than just a few words,” Sweeney wrote. “We have wrapped filming Christy Martin’s story and it has been one of the most emotional, transformative experiences of my life. Christy’s journey is so deeply inspiring, and having her by my side during this process was nothing short of surreal. There were moments on set where I’d glance over at her standing by the monitors, cheering us on, and I’d just become so emotional. Knowing what she’s endured, what she’s pushed through to be there in that moment—it made me want to cry.
“This story is so much bigger than just a film. It’s a testament to resilience, survival, and finding the strength to keep fighting. I can’t wait for you all to see it—not only because I’m proud of the transformation and the work I’ve poured into it, but because Christy’s story deserves to be told. And yes, you’ll get to see me kick some serious ass (like seriously kicked some ass) ((like I might’ve enjoyed it a little toooooo much while kicking ass haha)), but most importantly, you’ll witness a story that’s as powerful as the woman who lived it. I’ll carry this experience with me forever. Can’t wait to share more.”

On Sept. 11, Black Bear Pictures released the first trailer for “Christy.” The biopic starring Sweeney premiered this month at the Toronto International Film Festival.
The trailer for “Christy” truly captures Sweeney’s transformation. She told W Magazine that she gained 30 pounds to recreate Martin’s physique.
Judging by the first look at “Christy,” we’d say Sweeney accomplished that goal.
Early reviews for “Christy” are in.
As of this Thursday, 63% of critic reviews for “Christy” are positive.
“Anchored by Sydney Sweeney’s knockout performance and supported by a strong ensemble, the film captures both the triumphs and the bruises of a life lived in and out of the ring,” Danielle Solzman of Solzy at the Movies said.
“While not all of Michôd’s punches land, his star puts up a hell of a fight to show the complexity of Christy’s story, including the painful topics of domestic violence and homophobia,” Rodrigo Perez of The Playlist wrote.
Maybe, just maybe, Sweeney will receive critical acclaim for her performance as Martin.
“Christy” will release in theaters on Nov. 7.
