Look Back Live-Action: Expected Release Timeline Explained

In the official movie poster shared for promotion, it’s mentioned that the Look Back live-action film is set to premiere sometime in 2026; however, the exact release date hasn’t been revealed yet. So a late 2026 release can be expected, possibly alongside other winter releases. The poster highlights Fujino and Kyomoto in two separate visuals taken from the movie.

Given how well the Look Back anime film was received by the general audience, this live-action announcement isn’t all that surprising. Still, it’s pretty wild that it’s been only about two years since the anime film dropped, and we’re already getting a live-action adaptation. So when it finally releases, where will it be available to watch online?
Look Back Live-Action: Expected Streaming Platforms to Watch

Since the movie is reportedly being directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda, it’s worth noting that many of his previous works usually end up on platforms like Netflix, Tubi TV, and MUBI. So it’s a pretty safe bet that the Look Back live-action movie could land on one of these services too.
Aside from streaming, there’s also a good chance the film will get a theatrical release first. A director like Kore-eda often has his projects debut in cinemas before they hit online platforms, so fans might get to experience Look Back on the big screen before it shows up for streaming.

Hirokazu Kore-eda Directing Look Back Live Action Is a Good Omen
Hirokazu Kore-eda directing the Look Back live-action is honestly wild in the best way. He’s one of the few directors who can handle quiet, emotional stories with real depth, and his past works like Parasite, Monster, Shoplifters, Maborosi, and After Life prove he’s built for this kind of adaptation.
After the anime film’s massive success, getting a live-action announcement this soon feels unreal. It’s as if Fujimoto signed a contract with the Cinema Devil to make all his stories come to life as fast as possible.
The story itself is already emotionally heavy, and Kore-eda is known for making people cry without even trying. So with him in charge, it’s pretty much guaranteed we’re all going to get hit even harder this time. If the anime broke people, the live-action might just finish the job.
Even Hideo Kojima sharing the announcement on his Instagram has fans wondering if he might be involved in some way. Maybe he’s just hyped, or maybe there’s more to it; we’ll see. But either way, the hype is real. You’re excited too, right? Because we definitely are.
The Look Back anime movie is currently available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.
