American pop star Taylor Swift’s new film celebrating the release of her upcoming 12th album The Life Of A Showgirl has racked up US$15 million (S$19 million) within 24 hours of tickets going on sale on Sept 19 in the United States, US entertainment news site Deadline reports.
Titled Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party Of A Showgirl, the 89-minute movie includes the premiere of the music video for the first single, The Fate Of Ophelia.
It will also feature behind-the-scenes footage of the making of the music video, a commentary from Swift on The Life Of A Showgirl’s track list, as well as new lyric videos.
The limited-time theatrical event across the US will kick off on Oct 3, the same day the album is released, and have screenings until Oct 5.
According to Deadline, the film is expected to take in between US$30 million to US$50 million over the three days.
It is also slated to open in countries such as Britain and Mexico on Oct 3. The Straits Times understands that details of the Singapore premiere will be announced on Oct 3.
Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, a documentary film about her record-setting international Eras Tour (2023 to 2024) concerts, had its world premiere on Oct 11 and opened in Singapore cinemas on Nov 3. It became the highest-grossing concert film of all time, earning US$267.1 million at the global box office.
In a Sept 20 post on her social media platforms, Swift describes the Taylor Swift: The Official Release Party Of A Showgirl movie event as “a dazzling soiree” and encouraged fans to turn up in Eras Tour outfits or orange cardigans, and dance at the screenings.
The 35-year-old singer-songwriter first announced the album title on Aug 12. The surprise reveal became her most-viewed Instagram reel to date, garnering more than 130 million views in less than 24 hours.
She later released details of The Life Of A Showgirl in a guest appearance on the podcast New Heights, co-hosted by her fiance and National Football League player Travis Kelce. That Aug 13 episode garnered a record 1.3 million concurrent views on YouTube.
The follow-up to The Tortured Poets Department (2024) will comprise 12 tracks and was inspired by her experiences on the Eras Tour.
Swift said on the podcast: “I wanted to glamorise all the aspects of how the tour felt… I wanted to have an offstage moment as the main album cover because the album isn’t really about what happened onstage, but what happened offstage.”
