Jason Statham Officially Returns to Theaters With New 95-Minute Action Movie Next Week
Despite a rather uneven run at the box office in recent years, Jason Statham has avoided the temptation of starring in streaming projects. The action genre, particularly the mid-budget action films that Statham is known for, have largely transitioned from theaters to streaming in recent years. In fact, Netflix’s biggest hits this year are War Machine, Apex, and The Rip. Statham has plenty of evidence to suggest that a streaming movie headlined by him would do well, given how successful his theatrical movies have been at home. His latest release, Shelter, has mostly redeemed itself on the PVOD market following a lackluster box-office run. Now, Statham is poised to return with his second major release of the year, which arrives at just the right time for older audiences who’ve been overlooked in recent weeks.
Shelter was released in January, when it grossed around $53 million worldwide against a reported budget of $50 million. Despite mostly positive reviews and an 87% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, Shelter fell in the same range commercially as Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre. Directed by Guy Ritchie, Operation Fortune is among his two other underperformers of the last few years, along with Expend4bles. During this phase, Statham also headlined hits such as Meg 2: The Trench, which grossed nearly $400 million worldwide, and the two back-to-back action movies directed by David Ayer — The Beekeeper and A Working Man.
Here’s When Jason Statham’s New Action Movie Will Be Released in Theaters
Statham will return as the assassin Adam Clay in The Beekeeper 2, which has been slated for release in January 2027. Before that, however, he will star in a new original action film. We’re talking about Mutiny, directed by Jean-François Richet, who previously helmed the sleeper hit Gerard Butler vehicle Plane, and the Mel Gibson movie Blood Father. Mutiny also stars Annabelle Wallis, and follows a man who must clear his name after being set up as a murderer. Audiences excited to watch Statham return to seafaring action can watch Mutiny in theaters starting August 21. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
