Cameron Diaz’s Highest-Grossing Movie in 15 Years Reawakens on Streaming
After being retired for over a decade — her last release was the musical Annie, in 2014 — Cameron Diaz made a long-awaited return to acting with the appropriately titled film, Back in Action. Also starring Jamie Foxx, the movie was released on Netflix to poor reviews, but was a viewership success. In her heyday, Diaz wasn’t just known for her action roles, but was also a romantic comedy icon. She combined the two genres in 2010’s Knight and Day, starring opposite Tom Cruise. The movie recently made a return to the streaming charts, cracking the Prime Video top 10 domestically.
According to FlixPatrol, Knight and Day was the 10th-most-watched movie on the domestic Prime Video charts on October 8, when the leader board was led by the new Shane Black film, Play Dirty. It gained a spot on October 9, overtaking the animation blockbuster The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Meanwhile, over on the Netflix charts, Diaz’s breakout movie, The Mask, claimed the ninth spot as well. Directed by the very versatile James Mangold, Knight and Day was produced on a reported budget of around $115 million, and grossed over $260 million at the global box office.
It remains the highest-grossing film that Diaz has been a part of in the last 15 years. After Knight and Day, she headlined the comedy Bad Teacher, which grossed over $200 million worldwide as well. She also starred in The Other Woman, which also made nearly $200 million, and played a memorable supporting role in The Green Hornet, which grossed $230 million. Her last film before retirement was Annie, also starring Foxx. The movie underperformed with around $80 million worldwide. Knight and Day received mixed reviews, and is currently sitting at a 51% score on Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics’ consensus reads, “It’s pure formula, but thanks to its breezy pace and a pair of charming performances from Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz, Knight and Day offers some agreeably middle-of-the-road summer action.”
Diaz Is Returning to a Fan-Favorite Role
Both Cruise and Mangold have achieved even greater critical success since then. While Cruise recently starred in the well-received but commercially underwhelming Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Mangold last directed the Oscar-nominated music biopic A Complete Unknown. Diaz will return to voice Princess Fiona in the upcoming Shrek 5.
You can watch Knight and Day on Prime Video, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
