Hidden gem of an action film with MCU star is on Film 4 tonight | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV
Film 4 is set to air a captivating time loop film tonight (Friday) that will surely impress fans of the genre.
The film Boss Level follows the story of a former special forces soldier who finds himself reliving the day of his death over and over again.
The protagonist, Roy Pulver, portrayed by Frank Grillo, must unravel the mystery behind his murder while fending off relentless attacks from assassins. As well as the MCU star, the film boasts Naomi Watts, Mel Gibson, Annabelle Wallis and comedian Ken Jeong.
Joe Carnahan directed the film and co-wrote it with Chris Borey and Eddie Borey. It has been lauded for its perfect blend of action, clever plotline, emotion, and humour, making it an excellent all-rounder.
Roy, through constant repetition, has learned how to escape the flat where he dies every day. However, he struggles to survive any attack past 1pm.
He shares a son, Joe, with his estranged wife, Jemma (Watts), whom he visited the day before he started getting stuck in the loop.
Gibson takes on the role of the villainous Colonel Clive Ventor, who is entangled in the mystery. British actress Wallis, known for her roles in Peaky Blinders and The Tudors, plays Alice – Roy’s date and a dental hygienist.
The film, which was finally released on Hulu in 2021 after numerous delays and disputes with distributors, has received positive reviews from fans on Rotten Tomatoes, where it holds a 74% score.
“It’s so hard to do a time loop and video game styled film that isn’t silly or corny,” one viewer remarked, adding: “This one works brilliantly, you are just hooked in at the outset and learn with the main character. It’s a journey, it has real-life lessons for us all, it’s got amazing effects, it’s funny (in a die-hard sort of way), and even the ending deserves respect. A quality experience.”
Some were so enamoured they kept returning to it: “Absolutely brilliant, action-packed, fun movie, have watched this now multiple times, and it just gets better and better,” they shared. “Great story, and cleverly done, time travel movies don’t always work, but this one does, and does it well.. Frank Grillo is perfect in this, with a fantastic cast to work with. If you haven’t seen it, then you should.”
Another concurred: “Watched it five times and it still entertains as much as the first. Highly recommended if you like repeating time travel loops, sword fighting, revenge, strong action, all mixed in with a love story and a father-son relationship.”
A third viewer thought it was a game-changer, unlike other films of the same genre: “The story is engaging and keeps your attention from start to finish. The characters are memorable, with Roy standing out in particular, and most of the cast is surprisingly well developed.
“Unlike many other video game mechanisms (like Cursr), this one avoids the usual pitfalls and delivers something fresh and exciting. The ending leaves room for fan theories, which only adds to the experience.”
Boss Level airs on Film 4 at 11.40pm tonight (Friday, November 14).
