New Henry Cavill & Jake Gyllenhaal Movie’s Lack of Reviews & Buzz Is Troubling
Guy Ritchie has a brand new movie coming out this week, In the Grey, starring two of Hollywood’s biggest stars in Henry Cavill and Jake Gyllenhaal. Ordinarily, this would be a huge deal, and one of the biggest movies of the year. However, the film’s lack of reviews and buzz of any kind point to a more troubling outcome.
In the Grey’s lack of reactions is a troubling sign for Guy Ritchie’s new movie
Ritchie’s new movie, In the Grey, follows the story of a secret team of elite agents who do jobs “in the grey,” aka not always within the bounds of acceptable methods. The group is tasked with stealing back a fortune stolen by a tyrant. Cavill and Gyllenhaal star as Sid and Bronco, respectively, two members of the team who are loud, brash, and get the job done.
On paper, this sounds like a home run for all involved. Ritchie’s movies are notoriously action-packed and chaotic, and both stars seem perfect for the roles given. Even the trailer seems to feature Ritchie’s usual flair and style, with Cavill and Gyllenhaal fitting right in with the movie. However, the project is set to release this weekend, and we’ve heard next to nothing about it.
Currently, the movie is sitting at just four total reviews on the movie review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, not qualifying for a score just yet. Similarly, there’s almost nothing in the way of social media reactions to the movie. While this could just mean that no one has seen the movie yet, it most likely means something else.
Traditionally, movies have review embargos for both critical and social media reactions, allowing fans to get an idea of the movie ahead of its release. Embargos usually go up anywhere between a week to two weeks before a movie releases, depending on the project. Sometimes, though, movie studios will hold back these embargoes if the testing or reaction of a movie will be really bad. Of the four reviews for In the Grey currently live, all four are mostly mixed, with the highest score being a 5 out of 10.
Of course, this could mean nothing. The movie could simply just not be getting a ton of buzz due to other projects currently out. However, given the two megastars associated with the project, and the lack of press, buzz, or marketing we’ve seen from the movie, it’s looking more like the movie might just be a failure when it premieres, both critically and at the box office.
