New Movies on Streaming: ‘Tow,’ ‘Protector,’ + More
Rose Byrne is going full Nicole Kidman, which is to say, she’s an Australian actress who seems to never stop working. Last year she starred in the great comedic series Platonic and earned accolades for her role in If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, and this year she stars in another new drama, Tow, as a homeless woman fighting to keep for the only thing she owns, her car. That film is new on VOD this week, along with other titles like the gripping Swiss drama Late Shift, and Protector, which is the latest film collab between husband and wife team Milla Jovovich and Paul W.S. Anderson, who serves as producer.
In Protector, Jovovich plays Nikki, an ex-soldier who left her old life behind to raise her daughter Chloe. When Chloe is kidnapped, Nikki heads out to find hr kidnappers, kicking butt along the way. If Liam Neeson was a dad with a very particular set of skills in Taken, think of Jovovich as a mom with a similar skill set.

In Tow, out now on demand, Rose Byrne portrays Amanda Ogle, a real woman from Seattle whose car – the only thing of value she owned – was stolen and then towed and impounded for over a year. Ogle, who was homeless and living in the car, endured a lengthly legal battle to get her car back as a result, and the film is a tale of Ogle’s perseverance and grit, against all odds.
If you’re a fan of medical dramas like The Pitt, you’ll want to check out Late Shift, which was Switzerland’s Best International Feature entry at last year’s Oscars. The thrilling drama follows one nurse (Leonie Benesch) as she spends a night in the ER ward of her understaffed hospital dealing with her own anxiety and the dire, life-threatening conditions of some of her patients.
