The Five Best New Shows And Movies On Netflix This Week (May 2)
Netflix has dumped a bunch more shows and movies out on the service this week, and as ever, they are reluctant to tell you what’s actually good or not. Some are better than others, and if you want to know five things to watch this week, be they movies or TV shows, here’s the breakdown of what critics and audiences are enjoying:
Show: Man on Fire – This is the first TV adaptation of a novel that has been adapted twice, most famously by director Tony Scott and star Denzel Washington before this. For some bizarre reason, critics didn’t like that movie, but audiences loved it. Here, once again, we have a similar split for the Yahya Abdul-Mateen II version, where I’d call him one of the most underrated actors working today (go watch Wonder Man on Disney).
Movie: Jennifer’s Body – It did not review well at the time among critics or audiences, but it has since become a horror classic starring now Oscar-nominee Amanda Seyfried and Megan Fox, who is still starring in those genre movies to this day (go watch Till Death). The 2009 feminist feature was ahead of its time, and probably more fun to watch today than even back then.
Show: Running Point – Even with a viewership drop in season 2, Running Point remains a very well-liked series with an 84% and 77% critic and audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, respectively. It has one of the best comedic casts on TV today, including Kate Hudson, Brenda Song, Drew Tarver, Scott MacArthur and Max Greenfield, and the sports comedy is worth checking out from the start.
Movie: Green Book – It’s not every day that Netflix adds an Oscar Best Picture winner to its lineup, but it’s grabbed 2019’s Green Book, which not only won the top award but also Best Supporting Actor for Mahershala Ali. Viggo Mortensen was also nominated for Best Actor for the film. The drama about a bouncer turned driver for a classical pianist is considered among some film circles as a movie that shouldn’t have won, but you can see for yourself, and most audiences would disagree.
Should I Marry a Murderer?
Netflix
Show: Should I Marry A Murderer? – Rounding out the full genre of shows here, we will end with a docuseries about a woman who covertly exposes the crimes of her fiancé, risking her own safety in the process. The three episodes total just under three hours, and it’s currently the #1 show on Netflix, attracting a large audience as these sorts of engaging crime stories tend to do.
Those are my recommendations for the week, but I’m open to more suggestions, so let me hear them.
