Prime Video’s New Action Movie Reveals Hannah Waddingham’s ‘Ride or Die’ in First Trailer
From JD and Turk to Leslie and Ron, and Joey and Chandler, television is packed to the brim with iconic best friends. There are plenty of series that don’t just feature beloved duos but make friendship the entire focus, stemming back to classics like The Golden Girls, Seinfeld, or, the most obviously named of the bunch, Friends. Few shows have BFFs that literally kill for each other, though. In Paramount Television Studios and Amazon MGM Studios’ new team-up, however, the central duo does exactly that and so much more when their pasts catch up with them in a dangerous way.
First announced back in 2023, Ride or Die casts The Help Oscar winner Octavia Spencer opposite Ted Lasso Emmy winner Hannah Waddingham as besties Debbie Claybourne and Judith Burton, who’ve been inseparable for years and once believed they knew everything about each other. That is until Debbie learns that Judith is secretly an international assassin. Such a revelation naturally shakes the foundation of trust they’ve built, but with a figure emerging from Judith’s past and a hit spiraling out of control, they have to rely on each other more than ever as their worlds are completely derailed. In honor of National BFF Day, Prime Video shared the first official trailer, which follows the pair as they go on the run across Europe.
Before the action begins, the footage shows how a chance meeting on the side of the road between Debbie and Judith turned into 20 years of friendship. They cook together, host parties together, laugh together, and much more, until a night on the town ends with them evading some dangerous men with guns. The chaos steers Debbie into Judith’s world of murder-for-hire, though her involvement runs deeper than she knows. Debbie’s husband pilfered millions from the mob, which puts a target squarely on her back. Judith brings her along on a wild adventure to save her from the forces that be, getting her a fake British passport, even though she absolutely can’t do an accent, and introducing her to the ins and outs of espionage and action heroics, like how to jump out of a moving train. They become a much deadlier Thelma & Louise, in a race against the clock with the law, relentless criminals, and other skilled assassins after them.
Who Is Behind the Action in ‘Ride or Die’?
In addition to Spencer and Waddingham as the main buddy action-comedy duo, Ride or Die also features the talents of Ed Skrein, Calam Lynch, Savannah Steyn, Jamie Parker, Jacky Ido, and Sylvia Hoeks, with Bill Nighy playing the mysterious Director, who warns Judith in the trailer about a fateful choice she must make between her friend and the organization employing her. The series marks the first major production for creator and executive producer Tessa Coates, but she was joined by a showrunner with some action experience. Matt Miller, who created Fox’s Lethal Weapon reboot series and has served as a producer on Chuck and Peacemaker, takes the reins, while Ant-Man director Peyton Reed works behind the camera. Spencer’s Orit Entertainment also produces, alongside Andy and Barbara Muschietti’s Double Dream banner.
All eight episodes of Ride or Die premiere on Prime Video on July 15. Check out the trailer in the player above.
