The Mandalorian and Grogu’s Opening Weekend Compared to Every Disney Star Wars Movie – Comic Book Movies and Superhero Movie News
We finally have the box office numbers for the newest Star Wars movie’s opening weekend performance. After the theatrical release of The Mandalorian and Grogu last Friday, lets take a look at whether the Pedro Pascal-led film was able to surpass past installments in terms of opening weekend numbers.
The Mandalorian and Grogu movie was directed and produced by Jon Favreau. The movie stars Pascal as Din Djarin/The Mandalorian, Jeremy Allen White as Rotta the Hutt, and Sigourney Weaver as Colonel Ward. So far, it has already garnered an approval rating of 62% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 250 reviews.
How was The Mandalorian and Grogu’s opening weekend performance compared to Disney’s previous Star Wars movies?
Per Deadline, The Mandalorian and Grogu grossed around $81 million (3-day) and $98 million (4-day) in the U.S. and $167 million worldwide during the movie’s opening weekend. This makes it the lowest-grossing opening Star Wars film that Disney has ever released in the U.S., breaking Solo: A Star Wars Story’s 2018 opening box-office record ($84M 3-day domestic, $103M 4-day domestic, $153M worldwide).
2015’s The Force Awakens remains Disney’s best opening weekend performance to date for the franchise, grossing over $247 million. This is followed by 2017’s The Last Jedi ($220 million), 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker( $177 million), and 2016’s Rogue One ($155 million), which are significantly higher than The Mandalorian and Grogu’s record.
Despite this low opening turnout, the Jon Favreau-directed Star Wars movie might still have the chance to become one of Disney’s most profitable Star Wars films. The Mandalorian and Grogu movie has a production budget of around $165 million, which is half of Solo: A Star Wars Story’s budget. Even though it didn’t surpass box office expectations, the new Star Wars movie can still be sustainable enough for Disney, especially when the film’s opening weekend gross worldwide has already covered its total budget. Another reason why it could still enjoy a successful box-office run is the movie’s kid-friendly story. Generally, kid-focused movies have good holds week over week.
