30 Years Ago Today: Epic Action Movie That Defined the ’90s Was Released
30 years ago today, one of the greatest action movies ever made hit the big screens for the first time.
One can argue that no decade had a better combination of action films than the ’90s. This stacked list includes Terminator 2: Judgment Day, The Fugitive, Speed, Face/Off, The Matrix and Heat.
However, there’s a mega 1996 blockbuster that is often overlooked when discussing the decade’s best action films. That film, The Rock, was directed by Michael Bay and starred Sean Connery (John Patrick Mason), Nicolas Cage (Dr. Stanley Goodspeed) and Ed Harris (General Francis X. Hummel).
On June 7, 1996, The Rock was released in theaters. 30 years later, the film holds up as one of the decade’s defining action films.
The Rock‘s plot centers around a bold plan from General Hummel. He rounds up a group of rogue military marines to overtake Alcatraz Island, holding several hostages to keep their plan intact.
Hummel demands that the federal government pay $100 million to the families of the soldiers who died under his command. Hummel warns the government of his plan to launch rockets loaded with nerve gas on the San Francisco area.
Mason, who had escaped from Alcatraz decades earlier, teams up with Dr. Goodspeed, an FBI chemical weapons expert, and a team of Navy SEALS to thwart the rogue Marines’ plans.

With pulse-pounding action scenes, passionate dialogues, stunning twists and an excellent music score from Hans Zimmer and Nick Glennie-Smith, The Rock checked off every box you need in a classic.
Supporting characters like Commander Anderson (Michael Biehn), Major Tom Baxter (David Morse), Captain Darrow (the late Tony Todd), Captain Frye (Gregory Sporleder) and Captain Hendrix (John C. McGinley) stole their fair share of scenes, too.
30 years later, and you’ll be hard-pressed to find many action movies that delivered as well as The Rock.
