Debutant director Subash K. Raj’s martial arts family thriller ‘Blast’ lands in theatres with a highly explosive premise: what if a regular, middle-class household secretly doubled as an elite unit of black-belt karate pros? Produced by AGS Entertainment, the film masterfully reframes the classic defend-the-family blueprint, evoking a high-octane cross between Drishyam and a Stephen Chow-style action comedy. At the heart of the story is Arjun Sarja as the disciplined patriarch and a breakout Preity Mukhundhan as his fierce, no-nonsense daughter Nila, who effortlessly steps into the shoes of a traditional mass hero. When Nila’s righteous interventions cross paths with a ruthless corporate mining syndicate and a cold-blooded assassin, the stage is set for a massive, bone-crunching showdown. However, as highlighted in our comprehensive Blast movie review, the film struggles to maintain its initial momentum. While the middle act features incredibly clever plotting and exhilarating, precisely timed action set-pieces choreographed by Phoenix Prabhu, the screenplay frequently falls prey to clichéd commercial tropes, one-dimensional villains, and a bloated first half that over-explains every minor antagonist. Despite its structural flaws and an overbearing background score by Ravi Basrur, the sheer physical conviction of its lead cast and a badass mid-film transformation by Abhirami elevate this patchy actioner into a thoroughly enjoyable, whistle-worthy theatrical watch.

‘Blast,’ which marks Subash K. Raj’s directorial debut, is an extremely dynamic martial arts action-comedy that mostly fulfils its promise even when faced with minor speed bumps during its journey. Released under AGS Entertainment, this movie transforms what could have been a fairly ordinary narrative into an adrenaline-pumping suspense thriller by using the middle-class family vs. corporate syndicate plot setting. In this case, the film centres on Nila (a character superbly played by Preity Mukhundhan), who is an IT expert trained since her childhood in karate by her father, Rajaraman (Arjun Sarja). Having been raised in an atmosphere where she was taught to resist any form of wrongdoing, Nila finds herself in danger after coming into conflict with Varun Dayalan’s (John Kokken) multi-crore criminal gang and its killer Abraham (Arjun Chidambaram).

Undoubtedly, the best part of the movie would be the action sequences of Phoenix Prabhu. Instead of using martial arts just for the sake of beauty, the movie has a lot of action every now and then. There comes a time in the movie where there is an interval block that actually makes the theatre burn because of the amount of excitement generated through action. It’s easy for one to relate to Preity Mukhundhan when she acts in this movie with the arrogance that any mass hero would possess. Action King Arjun Sarja is a true heavyweight on screen, who knows when to play second fiddle to let his screen family have a bit of limelight. The biggest highlight for everyone watching the movie would definitely be none other than Abhirami, who plays the role of Nila’s mother. From the lady in a saree doing household chores to the lady tying her hair to break someone’s bones!

However, certain flaws in the movie give it a rather inconsistent flow. For instance, the script is very much entangled in its first half, where the filmmaker indulges excessively in providing long explanations of the background stories of the various henchmen and villains, putting the viewer’s patience to the test until the conflict reaches the doorstep of the family in question. Besides, though Arjun Chidambaram acts like a true assassin in his role, there seems to be a certain lack of intelligence on the part of the antagonists and the cops, as the film takes some really unrealistic turns to show how easy it was for the family to eliminate all proof of their crimes.
