4 Years Later, This 131-Minute Action Blockbuster Quietly Becomes a Late-Night Favorite
2026 is shaping up to be a big year for Tom Cruise, who will star in his first original action movie in almost 10 years. While that seems like a wild statement to make, Cruise has been reprising long-tenured franchise roles for a while now, especially with his work in Mission: Impossible, the franchise that has aired two new movies just in the last three years. Cruise is seemingly done playing Ethan Hunt now, though, with The Final Reckoning serving as a fitting ending for one of the most famous spies the world has ever seen. Cruise’s other notable franchise role, which he returned to in the last few years, was that of Captain Pete Mitchell, who he last played in the 2022 legacy sequel, Top Gun: Maverick.
Top Gun: Maverick is officially the highest-grossing movie of Tom Cruise’s career with a near $1.5 billion box office total. It’s one of the best-reviewed movies of the last few years, with filmmakers like Steven Spielberg coming out and saying he believed it “saved Hollywood,” and allowed movie theaters to continue operating during the COVID-19 pandemic. Top Gun: Maverick has been streaming exclusively on Paramount+ for years now, and the film has not-so-quietly become one of the most important streaming hits the platform has ever seen. It’s now been in the top 10 around the world for over two years, and it’s showing no signs of going anywhere anytime soon. The official synopsis for Top Gun: Maverick reads as follows:
“The story involved Maverick confronting his past while also training a group of younger Top Gun graduates, including the son of his deceased best friend, Goose, for a dangerous mission.”
What Do We Know About the Sequel to ‘Top Gun: Maverick’?
Paramount has officially confirmed that development is underway on a third Top Gun movie, and Christopher McQuarrie has even revealed that he’s nailed the idea and the script is being written. Cruise is still one of the busiest stars in Hollywood, and other Top Gun stars like Glen Powell and Miles Teller are also booked and busy, which could make getting Top Gun 3 into production a bit of a problem. Still, the demand is there, meaning Paramount will likely do all it can to make sure Top Gun 3 makes it to the big screen.
