“Being with Mabel, it’s an honest encounter with life.” Roadside Attractions / Lionsgate have revealed the first official trailer for a wonderful film based on a true story called H is for Hawk, adapted from the book of the same name. This premiered at the 2025 Telluride & London Film Festivals this fall, and is expected to open in theaters starting in December during the middle of the awards season. H is for Hawk follows Helen, who, after the sudden death of her father, loses herself in the memories of their time birding & exploring the natural world together and turns the ancient art of falconry—rooted in European tradition—training a wild goshawk (more info) named Mabel to navigate her profound loss. But as she teaches Mabel to hunt & fly free, Helen discovers how deeply she has neglected her own emotions and life. And that she must learn to fly, too. What begins as an act of endurance transforms into an intimate journey of resilience and healing. The film stars Claire Foy as Helen, and Brendan Gleeson as her father, along with Sam Spruell, Josh Dylan, Lindsay Duncan, and Denise Gough. This looks like a beautiful film about a very beautiful bird.
Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Philippa Lowthorpe’s film H is for Hawk, direct from YouTube:

Intro from the London Film Festival: “When Cambridge academic Helen’s (Claire Foy) father dies, the grief sends her spiralling into an abyss. In an effort to process her loss, she retreats from the human world to train a fearsome Northern goshawk. Foy gives an exceptional, career-best performance as Helen, while Charlotte Bruus Christensen’s cinematography & Sarah Finlay’s production design help director Philippa Lowthorpe access the gravity and emotion of this story.” H is for Hawk is directed by British filmmaker / theater director Philippa Lowthorpe, director of the films Swallows and Amazons and Misbehaviour previously, plus theater work and episodes of “The Crown”, “The Third Day”, & “Willow” most recently. The screenplay is written by Emma Donoghue and Philippa Lowthorpe. Based on the book of the same name written by Helen MacDonald. Produced by Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner. This first premiered at the 2025 Telluride Film Festival earlier this year. Roadside Attractions will release Lowthorpe’s H is for Hawk film in select US theaters this December 2025, and it also opens in January 2026 in the UK. Look good?
