Alan Ritchson’s WWII Action Thriller Officially Gets New Streaming Release Date
Some movies are built around subtlety, moral ambiguity, and quiet emotional restraint. This is not one of those movies. This is the kind of bone-crunching action story where extremely handsome men grow mustaches, pick up weapons, and set out to make World War II slightly more explosive than it already was. It didn’t exactly blow the doors off the box office when it first arrived, but streaming has a way of giving loud, pulpy action movies a much better second shot. Back to the mustaches, too. These things are works of art. Men will watch this and aspire to be better.
The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare will officially begin streaming on Peacock on May 18. Directed by Guy Ritchie, the 2024 action-war movie stars Henry Cavill (Man of Steel, The Witcher) as Gus March-Phillipps and Alan Ritchson (Reacher, Fast X) as Anders Lassen, who are both part of a secret British fighting unit assembled for a dangerous mission behind enemy lines. The film joins Peacock’s May lineup, giving action fans another chance to catch up with one of Ritchie’s most gleefully messy recent movies.
The cast includes Eiza González (Baby Driver, Ambulance) as Marjorie Stewart, Alex Pettyfer (Magic Mike, I Am Number Four) as Geoffrey Appleyard, Hero Fiennes Tiffin (Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, The Woman King) as Henry Hayes, Babs Olusanmokun (Dune, Wrath of Man) as Heron, Henry Golding (Crazy Rich Asians, The Gentlemen) as Freddy Alvarez, Cary Elwes (The Princess Bride, Saw) as Brigadier Gubbins, and Rory Kinnear (Skyfall, Men) as Winston Churchill.
How Good Is ‘The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare’?
Collider’s Maggie Lovitt was a big fan of the movie, hailing the “murderous himbos” in the main cast, and in particular singling out Ritchson for acclaim. Lovitt also took pleasure in praising the costuming and the production design of the movie, in a 7/10 review. Labeling the movie as a “crowd pleaser”, Lovitt felt that watching Ritchson rip the heart of a Nazi straight from their chest or Cavill knowingly smirking at the cameras while he took fire at the enemy were particularly pleasing moments for the audiences to witness on screen. And how can we disagree with that? This is two huge action stars at the height of their powers hamming it up and doing what they do best — entertaining audiences with broad-stroke action set pieces. More of this, please.
