The first trailer for Matthew McConaughey’s upcoming crime-drama movie, The Rivals of Amziah King, has been released. The film premiered at SXSW last year, garnering critical acclaim and leading to an impressive 97% aggregated rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

“Deep within the backwoods of rural Oklahoma, charismatic and musically gifted Amziah King herds a bluegrass-playing band of misfits while overseeing the premier honey-making operation in town,” reads the movie’s synopsis.

“When Amziah’s estranged foster daughter unexpectedly returns, Amziah leaps at the possibility to renew connection and create a family business. But the honey game is ruthless, and Amziah’s rivals threaten to destroy everything he has built.”

The trailer introduces McConaughey as Amziah King, a bluegrass musician living in rural Oklahoma who also runs a honey-making business. Reuniting with his estranged foster daughter, McConaughey’s Amziah King faces new enemies in town. The film marks McConaughey’s return to acting after taking a six-year hiatus from the field. Following it, McConaughey will team up with Austin Butler for a Park Chan-wook film.

Alongside Matthew McConaughey, the cast includes Angelina LookingGlass, Kurt Russell, Scott Shepherd, Cole Sprouse, Tony Revolori, and Rob Morgan. Together, they fill Amziah’s world as friends, rivals, and competitors pulled into the fight surrounding his booming honey business.

The Rivals of Amziah King is written and directed by Andrew Patterson, whose first film, The Vast of Night, received three nominations at the 2021 Critics’ Choice Super Awards. The film is executive produced by Rob Silva, John Friedberg, and Christopher Cassanova, with David Heyman, Teddy Schwarzman, Michael Heimler, Jeffrey Clifford, Will Greenfield, and Patterson set as producers.

The Rivals of Amziah King will be released in theaters in a limited capacity on August 14, 2026. Black Bear Pictures will distribute the film as a wide release on August 21, 2026.
