According to Pop Vortex, the film has claimed the number one spot on the iTunes Top Movie Downloads chart for 2026. It has outperformed several major movies, including Project Hail Mary, The Mummy, The Drama, and Born in East L.A., among others.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is the latest animated film based on Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros. franchise. Released in U.S. theaters on April 1, 2026, the film follows on from the story of 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The sequel was directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic from a screenplay by Matthew Fogel.
The movie follows Mario and his friends after Bowser Jr. targets Rosalina in an attempt to use her cosmic powers for a destructive new weapon. Following the attack on Rosalina’s Comet Observatory, Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach leave the Mushroom Kingdom behind and travel to rescue her before Bowser Jr.’s plan spirals out of control.
The adventure also brings Toad, Yoshi, and several Lumas into the story as the group faces new threats. The film’s voice cast includes Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Glen Powell as Fox McCloud, and Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr.
Critical responses to the movie have remained mixed. On Rotten Tomatoes, the sequel currently holds a 42 percent critics’ score based on 215 reviews. Meanwhile, audience response has been considerably stronger, with an 88 percent score.
