‘Absolutely brilliant’ hidden gem sci-fi adventure with A-lister on Film 4 tonight
Action movie starring a Hollywood giant and a hugely talented cast has been heralded by fans of the genre for being ‘fresh and exciting’
Anyone who enjoys a time loop flick should be suitably impressed by a film being shown on Film $ tonight (Friday), which sees a former special forces soldier continually wake up on the day of his death.
In Boss Level, Roy Pulver, played by Frank Grillo, must solve the mystery of his murder while he faces never-ending attacks from assassins. His co-stars in the widely praised film include Naomi Watts, Mel Gibson, Annabelle Wallis and comedian Ken Jeong.
Directed by Joe Carnahan, who also wrote it alongside brothers Chris Borey and Eddie Borey, it has been praised for containing just the right amount of action, clever plotline and emotion. There is also a good deal of humour thrown into the mix to make it a great all-rounder.

Roy has learnt through constant repetition how to escape the flat he dies in every day. However, he can’t seem to survive any attack past 1pm. He shares son Joe with his estranged wife, Jemma (Watts), and visited her the day before he started getting stuck in the loop.
Mel Gibson stars as evil Colonel Clive Ventor, who is mixed up in the mystery, and British actress Annabelle Wallis, who viewers will know from Peaky Blinders and The Tudors, is Alice – Roy’s date and a dental hygienist.
Fans of the film, which was eventually released on Hulu in 2021 after numerous delays and disputes with distributors, shared their thoughts on Rotten Tomatoes, where it holds a 74% score.
“It’s so hard to do a time loop and video game styled film that isn’t silly or corny,” claimed one, who continued: “This one works brilliantly, you are just hooked in at the outset and learn with the main character. It’s a journey, it has real-life lessons for us all, it’s got amazing effects, it’s funny (in a die-hard sort of way), and even the ending deserves respect. A quality experience.”
Some loved it so much they keep going back to it: “Absolutely brilliant, action-packed, fun movie, have watched this now multiple times, and it just gets better and better,” they posted. “Great story, and cleverly done, time travel movies don’t always work, but this one does, and does it well.. Frank Grillo is perfect in this, with a fantastic cast to work with. If you haven’t seen it, then you should.”
Another agreed: “Watched it five times and it still entertains as much as the first. Highly recommended if you like repeating time travel loops, sword fighting, revenge, strong action, all mixed in with a love story and a father-son relationship.”
A third believed it broke the mould, unlike other films with a similar theme: “The story is engaging and keeps your attention from start to finish. The characters are memorable, with Roy standing out in particular, and most of the cast is surprisingly well developed. Unlike many other video game mechanisms (like Cursr), this one avoids the usual pitfalls and delivers something fresh and exciting. The ending leaves room for fan theories, which only adds to the experience.”
Boss Level airs on Film 4 at 11.40pm tonight (Friday, November 14).
