A Very Royal Scandal

This British series revisits the disastrous 2019 interview between Prince Andrew and journalist Emily Maitlis from BBC’s Newsnight. In this interview, the Duke of York attempted to justify his connections with Jeffrey Epstein, who was accused of sexual crimes. The scandal provoked global outrage and shook the reputation of the royal family.

Written by Jeremy Brock (The Last King of Scotland, Diana and I), this three-episode mini-series revisits one of Britain’s most significant recent media events, whose effects are still felt today. The meticulous direction by Julian Jarrold (The Crown, This England) highlights the excellent lead actors, Michael Sheen (Masters of Sex, Frost/Nixon) and Ruth Wilson (Luther).

Winter 1970: M. Hunham, a pedantic and gruff professor of ancient history at a prestigious private boys’ high school in New England, is neither liked by his students nor his colleagues. Recently bereaved by the death of her son in Vietnam, Mary, the school’s cook, prefers to keep to herself during the festivities, completing this unlikely trio.

This bittersweet film, which transforms into a tender and improbable adventure, is a Christmas tale for the overlooked. This exquisitely melancholic comedy by Alexander Payne (Sideways, The Descendants) is driven by a compelling trio of actors: Paul Giamatti, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and Dominic Sessa.
