The Super Mario Bros Movie’s sequel has officially confirmed a title and the returning cast alongside a teaser trailer.

The follow-up to the smash hit Nintendo adaptation will be named The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, in a nod to the 2007 Wii game.

The title was unveiled today at Nintendo Direct alongside the news that Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key and Kevin Michael Richardson will all be back as Mario, Peach, Luigi, Bowser, Toad and Kamek, respectively.

In a first teaser clip, we follow a butterfly floating past a dozing Mario, before following it over the landscape, past Peach’s Castle, and then flying up into space to reveal the title.

The first Super Mario Bros Movie was released back in 2023 and became a huge box office hit, its $1.36 billion haul making it the second highest-grossing film of that year as well as the highest-grossing video game movie of all time.

However, it proved a more mixed affair with critics, hitting a 59% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes, with Digital Spy calling it “an Easter egg-stuffed treat for fans, even if more casual audiences might be wondering what the fuss is all about”.

The sequel was confirmed in early 2024, with original directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic returning to helm the follow-up.

“It’ll have a bright and fun story,” Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto teased at the time. “This time we’re thinking about broadening Mario’s world further. We’ll let you know once we’re at the stage where we’re ready to share more.”

Alongside the Mario sequel, Nintendo are prepping a Legend of Zelda movie that will see Renegade Nell’s Bo Bragason and The Haunting of Bly Manor’s Benjamin Evan Ainsworth play Zelda and Link.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will be released 3 April, 2026.
