Ahead of Its Sequel, The Greatest WWII Movie of the Decade Is a Free Streaming Hit
On April 28, 2023, what would become one of the greatest war movies of the decade was released in the US, courtesy of Lionsgate. That movie is Sisu, written and directed by Jalmari Helander as an international co-production between Finland and the US. The historical thriller originally debuted at TIFF on September 9, 2022, which was followed by a premiere in Finland on January 27, 2023, before hitting the States. As fans already know, Sisu was an immediate favorite among critics and audiences, while also performing averagely well at the box office, grossing twice its $7 million budget. Years later, the film is trending on streaming just a few days before its highly anticipated sequel arrives.
Sisu reappeared on streaming charts less than 24 hours ago, ranking as the 9th-most-watched movie on the popular free streamer, Tubi. The action pic is also trending internationally, including Finland, of course, where it has maintained its impressive position among the top 10 movies in the country for over a week. Sisu is set during the last desperate days of World War II, focusing on a legendary Finnish Army commando-turned-gold prospector who goes to extreme lengths to get his stolen gold back from the Nazis. Starring in the movie are Jorma Tommila, Aksel Hennie, Jack Doolan, Mimosa Willamo, and Onni Tommila.
What Do You Know About the ‘Sisu’ Sequel?
Titled Sisu: Road to Revenge, the historical sequel is expected in the US on November 21, 2025, which comes on the heels of its September premiere at the Fantastic Fest and its release in Finland on October 22. Helander returns to direct while Tommila reprises his role in the upcoming movie, with some much bigger sequel star power Stephen Lang and Richard Brake joining the Sisu universe.
Following its premiere in September, Sisu: Road to Revenge debuted with a perfect 100% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. This has now been slightly reduced to 96% based on 23 reviews, with the consensus praising the pic for “consistently and creatively [killing] the competition.” This is still a win for the franchise as the first film currently holds a Certified Fresh 94% from 184 reviews alongside an 88% Popcornmeter rating. Road to Revenge currently has no audience score.
Sisu is streaming on Tubi while its sequel arrives in the US this week. Stay tuned to Collider for more information.
