Sony’s New Spider-Man Movie Secures Biggest Domestic Box Office Debut in History
Update #2 []: Well, there it is: the new Spider-Man movie, Brand New Day, has beaten Avengers: Endgame to secure the biggest domestic Box Office debut in US history.
On final count, the movie managed a $360 million haul, eclipsing the previous record holder’s $357 million.
Earlier estimates had suggested the Tom Holland flick may narrowly miss out on the historic opening, but underestimate Spidey at your peril.
An unsurprisingly effusive Tim Rothman, boss of Sony Pictures, said the following:
“Wow! 360 million thank-yous to all the filmmakers, actors, producers, and to my colleagues at Sony, who created such a fantastic film and an exceptional marketing and distribution campaign. Records are made to be broken, but we will take great pride in this one, for as long as we hold it.”

Update #1 []: Variety now has word on Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s international Box Office performance this weekend, and we’re looking at a $927 million haul.
That makes it the second largest global opening in history, just behind Avengers: Endgame’s $1.2 billion.
It’s a number the vast majority of movies would dream of across their entire cinematic run; Brand New Day has managed it in one weekend.
Original Story: Fresh off some great financial results, Sony will be kicking back and sucking in the fresh air this weekend, as its new Spider-Man movie battles with Avengers: Endgame for the biggest Box Office opening in history.
Brand New Day reportedly pulled $168 million domestically on Friday, with Sony Pictures projecting a $325 million opening weekend for the superhero film.
But some analysts suspect the film could outperform that estimate, which would put it neck-and-neck with Avengers: Endgame’s all-time domestic record of $357 million.
Whether it can overcome Marvel’s ensemble outing or not, the new film is poised to comfortably displace Spider-Man: No Way Home, which currently commands Sony’s best-ever opening weekend, at $260 million.
The previous film in the Tom Holland saga went on to gross almost $2 billion internationally, so it looks like Sony is set to make bank on this latest effort, which also stars Zendaya, Sadie Sink, and Mark Ruffalo.
I’ll update once the full weekend results are in, but wherever it ends up, we’re looking at a gargantuan weekend here.
