15 Years Later, Jason Statham’s Star-Studded Action Movie Is a Streaming Sensation
As the chaotic modern world keeps throwing us curveballs, we can always rely on Jason Statham‘s consistent place in the streaming charts. Whether it’s new hits like A Working Man or an early classic like Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Statham is regularly among the streaming upper echelons. At the time of writing, one of his most memorable action flicks, known best for its star-studded cast, has returned to the streaming charts, officially placing in the top ten on Pluto.
Released in 2010, The Expendables saw Statham’s first-ever team-up with writer, director, and co-star Sylvester Stallone, before they would go on to make another three movies in the franchise, as well as the 2013 action thriller Homefront. Also starring Jet Li, Terry Crews, Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke, and more, the film delivered on its promise of a blood-pumping return to classic action movies, although it faced backlash from some critics who believed it didn’t quite go far enough with this promise. “It makes good on the old-school action it promises, but given all the talent on display, The Expendables should hit harder,” the critics’ consensus on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes reads, with the film earning a score of just 41%. A synopsis for The Expendables reads:
“Mercenary leader Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone) and his loyal men take on what they think is a routine assignment: a covert operation to invade the South American country of Vilena and overthrow its dictator. But, when they learn that the job will be a suicide mission, they must choose redemption or the destruction of their brotherhood.”
‘The Expendables’ Is One of Jason Statham’s Highest-Grossing Projects
Against some stiff competition in a stacked filmography, The Expendables is still one of Statham’s highest-grossing projects at the box office. On a reported production budget of $82 million, The Expendables earned a strong $268 million worldwide, tripling its investment. Split between a $100 million haul domestically and a further $168 million worldwide, the film proved popular across the world, and even finished 2010 as the 28th highest-grossing movie globally. The film first opened in the U.S. in August, topping its first weekend domestic ranks by outperforming fellow box office debutante Eat Pray Love.
The Expendables is currently available to stream on Pluto. Make sure to stay tuned to Collider for the very latest streaming stories from the world of movies and TV.
