New Conjuring Movie Passes Huge Global Box Office Milestone, Beating 4 Predecessors in Less Than a Week
Less than a week into its theatrical run, The Conjuring: Last Rites is already one of the highest-grossing horror movies in box office history. It delivered the biggest horror opening of the year last weekend, and has now shot past the $200 million mark at the global box office. The Conjuring 4 has also overtaken several of its predecessors in the Conjuring Universe, and is on track to become the franchise’s top-grossing installment. In this case, the decision to market it as the series’ final chapter seems to have paid off, although the same strategy didn’t really work for the recent Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.
With nearly $90 million domestically and another $120 million from overseas markets, the movie has made a total of $210 million so far at the global box office. It was originally projected to gross just around $80 million in its opening weekend, but ended up making roughly $100 million more. It did this without positive word-of-mouth and rave reviews. The movie is sitting at a 57% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, and it earned only a B CinemaScore from opening day crowds. Although this doesn’t sound ideal, these metrics don’t seem to be affecting the film’s box office performance.
The Conjuring 4 brings back franchise stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as Ed and Lorraine Warren, the controversial paranormal investigators on whose case files the franchise is based. The series began with James Wan‘s The Conjuring; Wan also directed The Conjuring 2. Both movies made around $320 million each at the global box office. The third installment, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, was released day-and-date on the HBO Max streaming platform, as a part of Warner Bros.’ controversial 2021 release strategy. Despite the hurdle, the movie ended up making over $200 million worldwide.
‘The Conjuring 4’ Is Set to Pass ‘Sinners’
Currently, the number to beat for The Conjuring 4 is $365 million, which is what the franchise’s top-grossing installment, The Nun, made during its global run. In the coming weekend, the movie should be able to overtake the majority of its predecessors, including fellow W.B. horror hits Final Destination Bloodlines and Weapons. It will also overtake Ryan Coogler‘s Sinners when it passes The Nun to become the highest-grossing horror movie of 2025, and one of the highest-grossing horror movies of all time. Produced on a reported budget of $55 million and directed by The Conjuring 3 and The Nun 2‘s Michael Chaves, the movie is playing in theaters. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
