3 Years Later, Channing Tatum’s Action-Packed ‘Uncharted’ Replacement Is a Glorified Hit on Streaming
Although his latest release, Roofman, may have hit the box office ceiling after around two weeks of release, Channing Tatum proved that he had a significant audience pull back in 2022, especially when paired with the very bankable Sandra Bullock. Their action-packed romantic comedy, The Lost City, emerged as a major hit in theaters at a time when the marketplace was still getting back on its feet, and when the genre found itself being relegated to streaming. In addition to its commercial success, The Lost City is also a permanent fixture on streaming charts, where it witnessed a resurgence recently.
According to FlixPatrol, it was the ninth-most-watched movie on the Paramount+ global charts on October 19, when the leader board was topped by Dakota Fanning‘s new movie, Vicious. The Lost City beat out Demi Moore‘s Oscar-nominated sleeper hit The Substance, which is also proving to be popular on the HBO Max charts simultaneously. The acclaimed body horror film took the number two spot in the global HBO Max rankings on the same day as it finished 10th on the Paramount+ charts. The Lost City was released in 2022 to mostly positive reviews. It followed a writer of popular romance novels, who is pulled into a real-life adventure with the cover model for her books. The movie combined the swashbuckling action of the Uncharted video games, which would be adapted into a feature film only a year later, and the adventurous tone of the classic Michael Douglas movie Romancing the Stone.
‘The Lost City’ Featured Brad Pitt in a Memorable Cameo
The Lost City also featured Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe in a colorful villainous role, similar to the one he played in Now You See Me 2. As an added attraction, the movie featured Brad Pitt in an extended cameo; Bullock returned the favor with a cameo in the Pitt-fronted action movie Bullet Train, which grossed around $230 million globally in the same year. The Lost City, on the other hand, grossed around $190 million worldwide, against a reported budget of nearly $70 million. The movie is sitting on a 78% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics’ consensus reads, “The Lost City doesn’t sparkle quite as brightly as some classic treasure-hunting capers, but its stars’ screwball chemistry makes this movie well worth romancing.” You can watch The Lost City at home, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
