All Super Mario Galaxy Movie easter eggs you might have missed
Did you catch these easter eggs in the Super Mario Galaxy Movie?
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is full of easter eggs, both big and small, for dedicated Nintendo fans to pick out while watching. While some of the references are clear as day, others are pretty deep cuts that will only be recognised by those who have a long and storied history with the Mario games.
As someone who grew up on the Super Mario games and absolutely fell in love with Mario Galaxy back in 2007, I was keeping my eyes and ears peeled for the tiniest of details throughout the 100 minute runtime. Although I’ve only seen the movie once, meaning there’s likely a few easter eggs I’ve missed, these are the ones that stood out to me.
Of course, beware of spoilers for The Super Mario Galaxy movie below. Did you spot all of these easter eggs?

Tostarena Town
The first time that we see Mario and Luigi in the movie, we observe them driving their dirt bikes towards a desert town with an upside down pyramid. This is actually Tostarena Town, which was first seen in Super Mario Odyssey.
T-Rex from Odyssey
Another Mario Odyssey reference is the T-Rex that chases Yoshi and the gang in the second half of the movie.
The T-Rex is another reference to Mario Odyssey as our titular character can throw his hat on its head to control its movements and smash through objects.
Peach’s Letter
When Peach and Toad leave the Mushroom Kingdom behind for space, the princess leaves behind a letter for Mario. In Super Mario Galaxy, Mario regularly received letters from Peach, sometimes including additional lives to help him on his journey.
Dragon from Odyssey
Another reference to Odyssey arrives in the final battle of the movie when Bowser Jr uses his paintbrush to summon a massive purple dragon. The boss enemy faces off against Mario at the end of the Ruined Kingdom stage in that game.
Bowser Jr’s Paintbrush Origin
When Bowser Jr rocks up, we see that he’s able to use a magical paintbrush to create objects out of thin air. This is called the Gaddbrush and was first seen in Super Mario Sunshine, where Bowser Jr also wielded it as his main weapon of choice.
Several Power-Ups
Mario encounters a few power-ups in the first movie, but Galaxy takes things to the next level when it comes to introducing items for the Bros to pick up. Here are all the ones I spotted:
- Penguin
- Frog
- Ice
- Fire
- Drill
- Cloud
- Blimp Yoshi
- Bubble
- Red Star
- Cape
Mr. Game & Watch
In the final battle against Bowser Jr., Luigi is able to summon another familiar character from a Question Block. It’s none other than Mr. Game & Watch, a popular Nintendo icon from one of the company’s early handheld devices.
He’s also playable in Super Smash Bros, leading some fans to believe that Nintendo could be teeing up for a Smash Bros spin-off movie.
R.O.B.
When Peach and Toad are asking for directions at the Gateway Galaxy, they encounter a slow-moving robot at the help desk. This is none other than R.O.B., or the Robotic Operating Buddy, an accessory for the NES back in 1985.
Pikmin
On the landing pad of Gateway Galaxy, we see a miniature ship land that’s full of Pikmin. These characters are from another one of Nintendo’s franchises, again hinting that Nintendo could be looking to build up its own multiverse with future movies.
Mario Maker
When Bowser Jr. traps Mario and Peach in a trench filled with fireball traps, he opens up a computer terminal running ‘Bowser OS’. He then remarks are about to ‘meet their maker’, before using the computer to manually place traps in their way.
This is an obvious reference to Mario Maker, a game that allows users to construct their own Super Mario stages and upload them for other gamers to try. Bowser OS even has a similar layout to Mario Maker, complete with 8-bit graphics.
Gusty Garden Galaxy Theme
Brian Tyler’s score is full of iconic leitmotifs and themes from Mario’s past, but there were two that really stood out to met as a fan of the franchise. The first was the iconic Gusty Garden Galaxy theme, which is widely recognised as one of the most iconic from Galaxy’s original score.
Strangely, it doesn’t actually appear during a Gusty Garden Galaxy section, instead attached to when Peach and Toad arrive at Gateway Galaxy as well as during moments in the final battle with Bowser Jr.
Jump-Up Superstar Theme
The second most iconic piece of music in the movie can be heard when Peach and Toad enter the casino area. Here, we can hear an orchestral version of Jump Up Superstar from Super Mario Odyssey.
Again, this is used in the wrong context as it’s normally heard in New Donk City, but it was great to hear the reference all the same.
Daisy
Last up, we have the final reveal from the end-credit scene. Daisy makes an appearance, confronting the mischievous monkey stealing things in Gateway Galaxy.
It’s not clear what Nintendo and Illumination intend to do with Daisy’s character yet, but fans are already wondering who would be best to voice her in a sequel.
