Clayface

Release date: Oct. 23, 2026

Variations on the shape-shifting Clayface date back to the DC Comics of the 1940s, and the monster remains a consistent presence in the franchise to this day. You’ll even see Clayface on the DCU animated series Creature Commandos (2024–present).

As Gunn explained to EW, Clayface was pitched to him by Mike Flanagan, the writer and director behind horror hits like Netflix’s The Haunting of Hill House (2018) and The Shining sequel Doctor Sleep (2019). Flanagan penned the script and James Watkins (Speak No Evil) directs, with The Batman director Matt Reeves producing.

“It’s a body horror movie,” said Gunn. “It’s a horror movie that, like any cool body horror movie, just happens to be in the DCU… We did not plan to do Clayface. That was really something he brought to us.” The film’s teaser trailer, released in April 2026, backs that sentiment up with a striking image of Matt Hagen, Clayface himself, sporting heavy facial injuries.

Welsh actor Tom Rhys Harries, a relative newcomer who previously appeared in Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen (2019), will star as the film’s titular character, a Hollywood actor who goes down a dark path after being horribly mutilated by a gangster. He’ll be joined by Naomi Ackie, Eddie Marsan, and Max Minghella.

“Both Matt Reeves and I were just blown away by [Rhys Harries], and can’t wait for you to see this film,” Gunn wrote in a June 2025 post on X.

Man of Tomorrow

Release Date: July 9, 2027

Not long after Superman flew into theaters and became DC Studios’ first cinematic hit, a follow-up went into development. Gunn shared the news himself on social media with an image teasing a team-up between Superman (David Corenswet) and Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult). Yes, you read that right: Clark is joining forces with his enemy.

The director later elaborated on the concept, saying, “It’s a story about Lex Luthor and Superman having to work together to a certain degree against a much, much bigger threat. It’s more complicated than that, but that’s a big part of it.” Gunn has also insisted that Man of Tomorrow is not a traditional sequel to Superman, but that it will feature several returning characters.

As a result, much of the core cast is expected to return alongside Corenswet and Hoult, including Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane), Isabela Merced (Kendra Saunders/Hawkgirl), Edi Gathegi (Mr. Terrific), and Nathan Fillion (Guy Gardner). Additionally, Milly Alcock will reprise her role as Supergirl — with director Craig Gillespie recently telling EW that her solo movie and Man of Tomorrow “perfectly segue together” — and Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart will make his cinematic debut in the film. Comic villain Brainiac will also appear in the movie, to be played by Lars Eidinger.

Filming is currently underway, suggesting the summer 2027 release date will hold firm.

The Batman: Part II

Release date: Feb. 18, 2028

DC’s latest iteration of the Caped Crusader, The Batman, earned $772 million upon its release in 2022, not to mention glowing reviews and even a few Academy Award nominations. As such, its upcoming sequel is a huge title for the studio, despite being an Elseworlds title, meaning it exists outside of the DCU’s shared universe.

Since the sequel was announced in April 2022, the project has seen numerous delays as writer and director Reeves continued to work on the script. It was originally slated for October 2025, but it’s received a slew of new dates over the past several years — the current release date is Feb. 18, 2028.

Robert Pattinson, who plays Bruce Wayne, a.k.a. Batman, even joked about the time in between installments. “I started out as young Batman and I’m going to be f—ing old Batman by the sequel,” he cracked during a March 2025 interview with Hero Magazine.

Since then, filming has officially begun, and several big-name actors have joined the cast. Marvel stars Sebastian Stan and Scarlett Johansson are among the newcomers populating Pattinson’s Gotham, playing Harvey Dent and his wife, respectively. Charles Dance, Brian Tyree Henry, and Sebastian Koch round out the new additions.

The latest release date push disappointed fans, but DC attempted to abate their distress: Reeves took to social media to reveal the first camera test footage for the film.

Creature Commandos season 2

Release date: 2027

While many saw Superman as the advent of Gunn and Safran’s era at DC, the first project they shepherded to the screen was Creature Commandos. The animated series, which follows a black ops team of monsters organized by Amanda Waller, wrapped its first outing in January 2025. It’s currently gearing up for a second season, with production underway.

Season 1 ended with a few notable developments, including the Bride of Frankenstein (voiced by Indira Varma) being posited as the team’s new leader, and Princess Ilana of Pokolistan (voiced by Maria Bakalova) revealing herself to be a secret villain.

“Up until the last 10 minutes of the show, you are not for sure convinced that she really wants to dominate the world,” Bakalova told EW following the season finale. “But she does! She wants control over everybody and to be the most powerful person in charge. It’s interesting how you can manipulate people by making yourself look more innocent, more fragile, and maybe even more stupid.”

In May 2026, Gunn offered an idea of when the series might return. In response to a fan on Threads asking which projects were coming after Man of Tomorrow, the director replied, “Well, Creature Commandos season 2 won’t be long after,” suggesting it is on track for a late summer — or even early fall — 2027 premiere.

Mister Miracle

Release date: TBD

In June 2025, DC Studios announced it was developing a series adaptation of Tom King and Mitch Gerads’ Mister Miracle comic series. Though much of the voice cast remains under wraps, including who will play the eponymous character, EW broke the news that Nathan Fillion’s story-hopping Guy Gardner will be heading to Mister Miracle in animated form following his live-action appearances in Superman and Lanterns.

“We brought Nathan into Mister Miracle’s show, and doing that, it’s just so wonderful. He brings that energy to every aspect of it,” King explained. “And you would think it would be different tonally from [Lanterns], but it blends because that’s who Guy is. He’s that guy who is over the top. We all know that guy who’s a little bit like that.”

The official plot synopsis for the show reads, “No prison can hold him. No trap can contain him. He is Scott Free, the worldwide celebrity sensation known as Mister Miracle, and he is the greatest escape artist who ever lived. But can he pull off the ultimate trick – and escape death itself?”  

It goes on to call the series “a harrowing, hilarious, heart wrenching journey across the pitfalls of the ordinary and extraordinary as the son of God raised by the devil tries to save his family, his world, and maybe even himself.” It’s been confirmed that the series will exist within the DCU continuity, and that the voice actors will reprise their roles in live-action.

In a 2017 interview with EW, King spoke about what drew him to the Scott Free incarnation of Mister Miracle, first introduced in the comics in the 1970s. “What makes Mister Miracle interesting is he’s the son of God, but instead of God giving his son to the people, he gave his son to the devil. That’s his origin,” King said.

“He was raised in Hell, tortured from his time he was a kid. The reason he’s a good escape artist is that he escaped that torture. The pain of his childhood is what he was trying to escape. He turned that into entertainment, he turned that into art. That makes it interesting to me, he turned it into a skill. There’s just something essentially American about an escape artist.”

The People v. Gorilla Grodd

Release date: TBD

In case anyone doubted Superman‘s success, they need look no further than the number of spinoffs it’s already spawned. Alongside the big-screen follow-ups Supergirl and Man of Tomorrow, DC Studios is developing an HBO Max series centered on Skyler Gisondo’s Daily Planet photographer, Jimmy Olsen.

The series, which has recently debuted the title of The People v. Gorilla Grodd, will follow Jimmy and his fellow Daily Planet reporters as they investigate cases involving villainous metahumans, with the first season centering on the Flash antagonist Gorilla Grodd. Scream 7 actor Jimmy Tatro will play Grodd, reuniting him with his American Vandal creators Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda, who serve as showrunners.

When asked about the project in June 2026, Gunn wrote on Threads, “It’s both a Jimmy Olsen AND a Gorilla Grodd show. And it’s one of my favorite projects.”

Along with the title reveal, the series received an eight-episode order and was billed as the DCU’s first mockumentary-style show. Gunn said that it would be “our first foray into the true crime genre,” set in a half-hour comedy format. The additional Superman cast members returning for the series are Beck Bennett (Steve Lombard), Mikaela Hoover (Cat Grant), and Wendell Pierce (Perry White). The DCU newcomers include Mary Holland, Eduardo Franco, Arian Moayed, Andrew Leeds, and Tim Baltz.

Booster Gold

Release date: TBD

Gunn and Safran announced Booster Gold back in 2023, but a February 2025 update revealed that it was delayed due to a “particular showrunner/creator” who expressed interest before ultimately bowing out. Then, in June 2026, David Jenkins (Our Flag Means Death) shared on Bluesky that he’d submitted the pilot script for the project. “I love it,” he said. “One of my favorite pilot scripts.”

However, only a month later, he revealed that his take on the series “won’t be moving forward.” TheWrap reported that Booster Gold will instead be shifted over to a new creative team.

Envisioned as an “outright comedy,” Booster Gold centers on the titular character, who uses advanced technology from the future to travel back in time and present himself as a super-powered hero.

Following the series’ announcement, EW expressed enthusiasm over the character’s involvement in the franchise, writing, “Booster Gold plays a major role in both Justice League International and 52 — two all-time great DC comics that we hoped the studio’s new regime might draw from.”

And we weren’t the only ones excited. Speaking with EW in 2023, Blue Beetle director Ángel Manuel Soto discussed his idea for a potential crossover between Blue Beetle and Booster Gold.

Waller

Release date: TBD

Waller, a Peacemaker spinoff about Viola Davis’ morally gray bureaucrat Amanda Waller, was one of the first projects announced by Gunn and Safran after taking over DC Studios. However, in August 2026, it was announced that work on the series would be put on hold. Though it is no longer in active development, it has not been shelved, and remains on the DC docket.

It was revealed in January 2023 that Doom Patrol creator Jeremy Carver and Watchmen writer Christal Henry would pen the series. But Gunn later admitted (via Variety) that it’s been a “bumpy road” for the project. With Peacemaker season 2 having already aired, Waller has required some reconfiguring.

Frank Grillo, who plays Rick Flag Sr. in Creature Commandos, Superman, and Peacemaker, also teased his involvement in the project on Instagram.

“Standing next to greatness, @violadavis,” he wrote (via Everything DC). “I think we look good together. #Waller.Spinoff.”

Paradise Lost

Release date: TBD

Waller isn’t the only show to be downgraded to a lower priority: Paradise Lost is also no longer in active development. Like the Davis-fronted series, it may still be revived in the future.

Announced in January 2023, the potential HBO Max series has been described as a drama set on the island of Themyscira, home of Wonder Woman, that will focus on “the genesis and political intrigue of an island of all women,” according to a press release.

“It’s almost like Game of Thrones with Westeros but with all the inhabitants of Paradise Island,” Gunn teased at the time.

“Paradise Lost is moving along. It’s slow-moving, but it’s moving,” Gunn told EW in May 2025. “And, yeah, I really love that project a lot.”

When EW asked if the project is “directly connected” to the studio’s plans for Wonder Woman, Gunn was cagey. “Yes. Well, yes and no. Wonder Woman‘s a separate thing. We’re working on Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman‘s being written right now. So it’s different. I mean, not different. They’re connected. She’s from f—ing Themyscira, so…”

While there isn’t much to report about the state of Wonder Woman in the DCU, Gunn did reveal to EW in June 2025 that a new project centering the lasso-whipping hero was in the works. Soon after, it was revealed that Supergirl writer Ana Nogueira was writing the script. In June 2026, she told Variety that she was still in the “early days” of the process.

As EW reported, Warner Bros. Discovery head David Zaslav cited Wonder Woman as one of the pillars of this new era of the DCU, along with Superman, Batman, and Supergirl.

Gunn weighed in, telling EW, “I think that’s accurate, actually. I think that he got that from something I said. I wouldn’t say only those four characters, but I would say that those four characters are incredibly important to us.”

Gunn also confirmed that he had yet to cast the role of Wonder Woman, which very likely means that Gal Gadot, who played the superhero in several DCEU titles, won’t be returning to the role.

A third solo Wonder Woman film was in the works, but director Patty Jenkins, who helmed 2017’s Wonder Woman and 2020’s Wonder Woman 1984, said in 2024 that her work with the franchise is “over for the time being, easily forever,” citing Gunn and Safran’s new vision for the studio.

The Brave and the Bold

Release date: TBD

The Brave and the Bold, one of the first projects announced by Gunn and Safran, has been described as an oddball father and son story about Batman and Robin. Don’t expect to see Pattinson’s Caped Crusader, though, as this live-action story will exist in a different continuity.

Andy Muschietti, who previously helmed The Flash for DC, will direct, with his sister and creative partner Barbara Muschietti producing.

“We saw The Flash even before taking the reins at DC Studios, and we knew we were in the hands of not only a visionary director but a massive DC fan,” Gunn and Safran said in a statement to EW. “So, when it came time to find a director for The Brave and the Bold, there was really only one choice. Luckily, Andy said yes; Barbara signed on to produce with us and we were on our way. They’re an extraordinary team, and we couldn’t have better or more inspiring partners as we embark on this thrilling new adventure in the DCU.”

Swamp Thing

Release date: TBD

Swamp Thing was announced in January 2023, and is slated to be the final film in the first phase of the DCU, which Gunn and Safran titled “Gods and Monsters.” James Mangold, the Oscar-nominated filmmaker behind films like Ford v Ferrari (2019) and A Complete Unknown (2024), will write the script and is in talks to direct.

“While I’m sure DC views Swamp Thing as a franchise, I would be viewing it as a very simple, clean, Gothic horror movie about this man/monster,” Mangold told Variety in 2023, adding that he’d been “toying for years with the idea of making a kind of Frankenstein movie” and that he views it as a “standalone.”

Speaking with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast in July 2025, Gunn revealed that Mangold hadn’t yet turned in a script due to his busy schedule, but confirmed, “We’re talking about it again.”

Teen Titans

Release date: TBD

Gunn and Safran announced a live-action Teen Titans film in March 2024, revealing that Supergirl screenwriter Ana Nogueira would pen the screenplay. In June 2026, Nogueira told Variety that, like her Wonder Woman script, Teen Titans is still in its “early days.”

The pint-sized team of teenage superheroes first appeared in DC comics in the 1960s, and recently soared in the series Titans, which aired four seasons between 2018 and 2023.

Sgt. Rock

Release date: TBD

Sgt. Rock is one of the more intriguing projects in development at the studio, if only because it’s had some lofty names attached and its current status is… interesting. The Oscar-nominated Call Me By Your Name director Luca Guadagnino was at one point attached to direct, with a script penned by his Challengers and Queer collaborator Justin Kuritzkes. Colin Farrell, who starred in The Batman and its spinoff series The Penguin, was reportedly in talks to star.

First introduced in 1959, Sgt. Frank Rock battled Nazis in World War II. “What we love about Sgt. Rock is the opportunity to tell a story about heroism and conflict in [a] compelling and unique way,” Safran told reporters earlier in 2025. “Justin really wrote a wonderful screenplay and that’s what catapulted that project to the forefront.”

In April 2025, reports surfaced claiming Sgt. Rock was no longer in development, allegedly due to scheduling problems. When EW asked Gunn about the project in May of that year, he said it was “in a pretty good place,” adding, “We’re still moving forward, but… it wasn’t exactly where I wanted it to be creatively, and so it needs to change a little bit.”

During his 2025 Happy Sad Confused appearance just a couple months later, Gunn said he was “really excited about Sgt. Rock,” though he also shared that Guadagnino was no longer involved. EW has reached out to the studio for clarity on the project’s current status.

Untitled Mr. Terrific spinoff

Release date: TBD

Another Superman spinoff revolving around Edi Gathegi’s Mr. Terrific is reportedly in the works. Rumblings of this project began in 2025 after the movie’s release, and The Hollywood Reporter recently mentioned it is in “active development,” with Allan Heinberg (The Sandman) writing the pilot. EW has reached out to DC Studios for comment.

Untitled Deathstroke/Bane movie

Release date: TBD

In late 2024, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that the DCU was developing a film centered on a pair of DC supervillains, Bane and Deathstroke. Gunn and Safran confirmed the project’s existence in February 2025, with Variety reporting that Captain America: Brave New World writer Matthew Orton was penning the screenplay.

In May 2026, Deadline reported that Greg Mottola (Superbad), who previously directed two episodes of Peacemaker, had emerged as a frontrunner to helm the film. EW has reached out to the studio for comment.

Additional animated projects

In addition to Creature Commandos and Mister Miracle, DC Studios is moving forward with a number of animated titles.

Most recently, DC Studios unveiled three new animated series at the 2026 Annecy International Animation Film Festival, starting with Absolute Batman, an adaptation of the comic series of the same name by Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta (both of whom will serve as creatives on the new series). It will follow an alternate version of the Caped Crusader who exists as a working-class hero, not a billionaire.

Also on deck is DC’s first-ever anime series, Joker: Laugh Riot, which will follow the iconic villain after Batman is killed — by someone other than him. It’s geared toward an adult audience and comes from executive producer Jim Krieg and director Yasuhuro Aoki. For the kids, a Krypto series has been greenlit, following the mischievous dog’s adventures alongside a “gang of misfit criminal wannabes.”

Beyond these shows, My Adventures with Superman season 3 recently came to a close on Adult Swim and a Green Lantern spinoff centered on Jessica Cruz (Auli’i Cravalho) is in the works. Season 2 of Amazon Prime Video’s series Batman: Caped Crusader debuted on July 31.

On the film side, the first installment of the animated Batman: Knightfall trilogy — Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall — is slated for digital release later in 2026. Featuring Anson Mount as Batman, it adapts the iconic “Knightfall” comic storyline, which pits the Dark Knight against Bane.

A Robin-centric film, Dynamic Duo, is scheduled for release on June 30, 2028.

The Authority

Status: Shelved

The Authority comes from WildStorm, an imprint of DC, and will likely appeal to fans of the ultra-violence and irreverence of The Boys. A film centering around the team was part of Gunn and Safran’s first wave of announcements, but it has since been shelved indefinitely.

In April 2026, Gunn confirmed the news on Threads, writing, “The script wasn’t quite there but more importantly it didn’t work in terms of the larger DCU both in terms of the story and practical concerns. Maybe some day. Not soon.”

Regardless of where the movie stands, the property itself has already made some headway in the DCU. One key member of the Authority is the Engineer, who made their DCU debut in Superman. Speaking with EW for our Superman cover story, actress María Gabriela De Faría had previously suggested plans are in place for the future of her character.

“We did have a bit of that conversation about the future of the Engineer,” she said. “And the motherf—er was very secretive. He was like, ‘I have a great idea,’ and then [texted] a little emoji. Okay, so what is it?! And then he didn’t reply. He’s keeping me in the dark, but apparently he has a great idea of what to do with this character.”

Perhaps The Authority will live on someday.
