Lin-Manuel Miranda is unveiling the A-list cast of his new movie as a director.
On Tuesday, April 14, Miranda, 46, announced on Instagram that Rachel Zegler, Amanda Seyfried, Jonathan Groff, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Phillipa Soo, Tramell Tillman and Paul-Jordan Jansen will star in his upcoming feature film adaptation of the musical Octet.
Miranda posted a photo of a rehearsal sign-in sheet for the movie on Instagram bearing the cast’s handwritten names next to their characters. “Rehearsals have begun,” he wrote in a caption to the post.
Miranda and his production company 5000 Broadway Productions first announced that he will direct a film adaptation of Octet, a musical that made its world premiere as an Off-Broadway production in 2019, on April 2. “I haven’t stopped thinking about Octet since I saw Annie Tippe’s premiere production in November of 2019,” Miranda said. “Dave Malloy’s score is versatile, brilliant and grows more relevant with each passing year. It won’t leave me alone so here we are.”
The movie will be the first film Miranda has directed since his 2021 feature directorial debut tick, tick… BOOM!, based on composer Jonathan Larson‘s stage musical of the same name.
“Eight internet-obsessed people meet in a church basement and lock their phones in a box,” reads an official synopsis for Octet. The movie — and the musical it is based on — “follows an octet of people struggling with digital dependency, charting their compulsions using only the analog vibrancy of their own voices,” per the synopsis. “With witty lyrics, shimmering harmonies, and virtuosic solos, Octet sings of connection, redemption, hope—and how we can be truly present with each other.”
Dave Malloy, who wrote the original musical, said in an April 2 statement that he is “over the moon” that Hamilton creator Miranda is adapting the show into a movie. “I was utterly gobsmacked by his work on tick, tick…Boom!, and feel so honored to have such a beacon of the musical theater world bring this piece into a new life,” he said. “As a brilliant storyteller, fellow internet junkie, and dear friend, I know he’s going to make something amazing. And our cast is completely ridiculous.”

The movie’s cast is filled with acclaimed performers and singers: Zegler, 24, just won an Olivier Award on Sunday, April 12 for her performance in Evita in London last summer. Seyfried, 40, is fresh off her 2025 movie The Testament of Ann Lee, which features several musical sequences. Octet also serves as a reunion between Miranda, Groff, 41, and Soo, 35, more than 10 years after they starred in Hamilton‘s original Broadway cast. Groff, 41, is fresh off a run in the lead role in Broadway’s Just in Time.
Octet does not yet have a release date.
